Rohnert Park, Calif.--- SF State men's basketball team fell to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA as they lost their second straight game, a 80-68 setback to the Sonoma State Seawolves (5-6, 1-3 CCAA) in Rohnert Park, California.
Brad Visman (Placerville, California, UC Riverside)and
Robert Hayes (San Diego, California, St. Augustine's) paced the Gators each with 16 points while
Visman recorded his second straight double-double with 10 rebounds.
Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) added a career high 14 points off the bench for SF State and
Martin Flores (Woodland, California, Solano Junior College) scored 12 points.
“Sonoma State was definitely the hungrier team tonight,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “You cannot play great every night, but you can bring intensity and energy and that was an issue tonight,” added Treseler. “We're in the middle of a tough stretch of the schedule, but we have great kids and I am confident we'll bounce back.”
The Seawolves jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game and increased their lead to 23-15 with 5:18 to go in the first half. SF State cut the Seawolf lead to 23-17 with 3:45 left on a jumper by
Martin Flores, but Sonoma State finished the half outscoring its visitors 9-2 to take a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
The hosts increased their lead to 38-23 in the first two minutes of the second half, but the Gators outscored Sonoma State 10-4 to cut the lead to 42-33 on a three by
Phoenix O'Rourke with 13:26 on the clock. Sonoma State followed that Gator run outscoring its visitors 9-8 in the next five minutes to take a 55-41 lead. Sonoma State held its lead at 14 (66-52) with 4:47 to go, but SF State would not go away as the Gators went on a 17-3 run capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by
Brad Visman to cut the lead to 69-63 with three minutes to go in the game. Sonoma State finished the game going 9 of 10 from the line to secure the 80-68 victory over the Gators.
James Sandoval led the Seawolves with a game high 23 points while Steven Pratt added 18 points for Sonoma State. SF State continues its season long five-game road trip next weekend with a pair of conference games in Southern California against CSU Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA on January 9 and 10.
