SAN FRANCISCO – Pitcher Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick-St. Vincent)tossed her seventh complete game of the season to help the San Francisco State softball team defeat Western Washington, 6-2, in a non-conference tilt Tuesday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field. With the win, the Gators even their record at 17-17 on the season, while the Vikings drop to 9-10 overall.
Jackson (9-7) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters en route to the victory. She also retired nine in a row at one stretch between the second and fifth innings. Meanwhile, Sarah McEnroe (6-6) took the loss, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks before yielding to reliever Jessica Rosencrants in the third.
SF State jumped out of the gates with four quick runs in the first and never looked back. Danielle Chapman (San Jose, California, Westmont, San Jose City College)led off with a walk and promptly advanced to second after Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) reached on an error. Moments later, Kelsey Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) drove in Chapman with a single to left, while Gubbine subsequently scored after Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger) got aboard on WWU's second miscue of the frame. Colleen Nilles (Simi Valley, California, Royal) and Jessica Delgado (Monterey, California, North Monterey, Cal State Monterey Bay) followed with consecutive RBI singles to plate Wood and Cardenas, respectively, giving the home team a comfortable 4-0 advantage.
The Gators then stretched their lead to 6-0 in the third when Nilles belted her first home run of the year over the left field fence, knocking in Lauren Candia (San Francisco, California, University of San Francisco), who entered as a pinch runner after Wood led off the inning with a walk. Nilles finished with two hits and three RBI to pace the SF State offense.
Jackson came up short in her shutout bid as the Vikings scored two runs in the seventh on Samantha Rutherford's RBI groundout and a Caitlin Dotlich RBI single. However, the SF State starter induced a pair of grounders to nail down the victory.
The Gators return to the diamond this weekend when they compete in the Tournament of Champions, April 3-5, in Turlock, Calif. SF State will face Central Washington in its opener on Friday beginning at 1:45 p.m. before squaring off against Northwest Nazarene at 6 p.m.
