CARSON--- SF State's women's volleyball team won its fifth straight match Friday with a four-set win over the CSU Dominguez Hills Toros 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-19 to improve to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA. With the victory, the Gators stay in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with No. 4 UC San Diego and No. 15 Sonoma State and one-game behind No. 2 CSU San Bernardino.
"Kyle (Lamet) and Halimah (Oswald) had great nights offensively," added SF State Head Coach Michelle Patton. "CSU Dominguez Hills played a nice second game and we responded in teh last two games," said Patton. "Fortunately, we turned up our serving the third and fourth game and got back into an offensive rhythm," added the second-year coach. "It was another great team effort by the girls this evening."
SF State recorded the first point of set one when
Beth Perkins recorded the first of her game high 18 kills. The Gators increased their lead to 4-1 when they rattled off three straight points. The Toros (1-12, 1-5 CCAA) tied set one at 5-5 on an attack error by the Gators, but SF State rattled off 6 of the next 8 points capped by a
Vanessa Shaw (Santa Barbara, Calif., Dos Pueblos HS) ace. CSU Dominguez Hills cut into the Gator lead at 15-13, but once again SF State came back this time with seven of the next nine points keyed by
Kyle Lamet (Benicia, Calif., Carondelet HS) and
Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif., Mt. Hood CC)kills to take a 22-15 The Gators capped the first set win on a ace by
Halimah Oswald (San Francisco, Calif., Waldorf HS).
In set two, Samantha Maxwell scored the first two points on a kill and an ace to give the Toros a 2-0 lead. The hosts increased their lead to 4-1, but the Gators tied the match at 12-12 on another kill by Perkins. CSU Dominguez Hills built its biggest lead to 20-14 on a Maxwell kill. SF State then rattled off 8 of the next 11 points to cut the Toro advantage to 23-22 on a kill by
Robyn Hall (Hayward, Calif., Bishop O'Dowd HS). The Toros closed out the set two win on two straight kills by Ashley Clark.
SF State came out in set three with a 10-7 advantage and cruised to a 25-13 win to take a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set. Once again, the Gators came out and took a 10-7 lead and increased their lead to 14-9 on a hitting error by the Toros. CSU Dominguez Hills cut the Gator lead to 15-13 on a Maxwell kill. SF State came back to score the next three point after a Gator timeout to increase their lead to 17-13, a lead they would not relinquish as they held on to a fourth set win of 25-19.
The Gators, who are now 7-1 in matches that go to four sets, had a hitting percentage of .273 with Perkins leading the way with 18 kills followed by Lamet and Oswald at 11 each. Oswald had a hitting percentage of .714 while Perkins had another double-double with 12 digs to go along with her 18 kills. Lamet also had a double-double with 15 digs. The Gators had seven service aces with
Vanessa Shaw and
Iris Tolenada (Antioch, Calif., Deer Valley HS)recording two each as Tolenada also had 46 assists.
SF State continues its four-game road trip tomorrow night for a 7pm starting game at Cal State LA. The Golden Eagles defeated Cal State Monterey Bay this evening at home (25-18, 25-11, 25-13).
