POMONA, Calif.--- SF State's baseball team defeated the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 6-3 in the first game of this weekend's four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series at Scolinos Field in Pomona, California. SF State senior pitcher Spencer Kreisberg (Tigard, Oregon, Los Medanos College)picked up his first victory of the season by pitching 7 innings, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out five and walking four. Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College)led the Gators' hitting attack going 3-for-4 scoring twice and driving in a run.
Jenzen Torres put the Broncos (12-11, 6-8 CCAA) on the board first on a lead-off home run in the bottom of the second inning, his team leading seventh of the season.
SF State's Mielke and Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University)opened up the Gators' third inning with back to back singles. Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College) drove in Mielke with the tying run with a single. Andersen and Nyman each stole a base to move up to second and third base for Kevin Dultz (Altadena, California, Glendale Community College), who drove in Anderson with the go-ahead run on a ground out.
Mielke's two-out RBI single in the fourth scored Geoff Downing (Half Moon Bay, California, New Mexico State University), who lead off the inning with a walk to increase the Gators' lead to 3-1. SF State added three more runs in the seventh inning on Ryan Williams' two-run single that scored Mielke and Andersen to double the Gators' lead to 6-1.
The Broncos made a rally in their half of the seventh. Richard McDowell led off the inning with a double and scored on Michael Neff's single. Manny Navarro's one-out single advanced to Neff to third, who then scored on a two-out single through the right side by Erik Riedel. Kreisberg struck out the next Bronco to end the host team's scoring threat.
Patrick Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College)came in the Bronco eighth and shut down Cal Poly Pomona by pitching two scoreless innings, facing the minimum batters while striking out three to record his first save of the season. The senior righty now has 44 strikeouts with just 12 walks in 31.2 innings pitched.
Jarrett Attard fell to 0-1, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs and three hits while striking out six and walking two.
Williams also had two hits for the Gators (9-11, 3-6 CCAA), driving in two runs and Nyman had three stolen bases for SF State to give him a team leading 8 stolen bases for the season.
The two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon, for a doubleheader at Scolinos Field on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.
