Cal State LA Takes Series From Gators

Nick Nyman Had His 4th Multiple-Hit of the Season Going 2-For-4 This Afternoon
SAN FRANCISCO--- The visiting Cal State LA Golden Eagles won this weekend's four-game series from the SF State Gators by taking the series finale, 17-6, this afternoon at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State. With the win, Cal State LA improves to 8-10 overall and 6-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Gators fall to 7-11 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA.
 
SF State took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning as Keith Garcia (Ventura, California, Oxnard College)and Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College) opened the inning with back to back singles. They both advanced a base on Ryan Williams (Woodland, California, Yuba College)ground out. Garcia scored on a ground out by Kevin Dultz (Altadena, California, Glendale Community College)and Nyman came in on Nick Bowerman's two-out single through the right side to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. 
 
The Golden Eagles tied in their half of the second on a two-out two-run single by Cliff Quick which scored Mark Sunga and Chris Matzner. Nyman's two-out two-run single in the bottom of the second (which scored Sean Proni (Valencia, California, College of Marin) and Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College)) gave the Gators back the lead, 4-2. 
 
Cal State LA came back though and tied the game at 4-4 on Matzner's two-out two-run single which scored Sunga and Matt Miraldi in the top of the third. Once again, the Gators retook the lead (5-4) in their half of the third on Tyler Overstreet (Fresno, California, Santa Barbara City College) two-out RBI single to left field which scored Dultz with the go-ahead run.

Miraldi's three-run home run with two outs in the Golden Eagles' fourth gave the visitors a 7-5  (a lead they would not relinquish) as Rory Young (1-1) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for Cal State LA. He gave up just one hit while striking out one and walking one.
 
Cal State LA then scored at least one run in the final five innings including breaking the game open with a five-run eighth inning which was capped by a Sam Wiley's two-out two-run triple. 
 
Geoff Downing (Half Moon Bay, California, New Mexico State University) added a solo home run for the Gators in the bottom of the eighth as SF State lost 17-6. 
 
The trio of Young, JR Bromberg, and Matt Clark pitched 6.1 innings of relief, giving up four hits and one run while striking out three Gators and walking just one. Wiley finished the game 5-for-6 with three runs batted in and Matzner was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in while scoring three times. Quick also had three hits for the Golden Eagles. 
 
Kyle Mastellar (Corning, California, Shasta Junior College)(1-2) took the loss for the Gators pitching three innings of relief, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs (four earned). SF State did manage 11 hits with Nyman and Overstreet each going 2-for-4. Nyman also drove in two runs and scored one of the Gators' six runs. 
 
The Gators will return to the diamond this Wednesday, March 10 at 2pm, for a non-conference game with Cal State Monterey Bay at SF State's Maloney Field.
