BAKERSFIELD, Calif.— Wrestling in their first dual of the 2012-13 season, it was the visiting SF State Gators falling 32-9 to the NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (4-1) at the Old Gym on Cal State Bakersfield's campus. Winning for the Gators were
Naveed Bagheri,
Isaiah Jimenez and
Thomas Martin at 141, 165 and 197.
Cal State Bakerfield's Tyler Iwamura (who is ranked 18
th in the nation in Division I at 125) improved to 12-2 with a 12-0 major decision over the Gators'
Marc Collier. The Roadrunners took an 8-0 lead when Ian Nickell (who is ranked 16
th in the nation in Division I) improved to 17-4 with a 10-2 major decision over SF State's
Isaiah Hurtado at 133.
SF State got on the board with a 5-1 decision by two-time All-American
Naveed Bagheri over the Roadrunners' Jose Mendoza. With the win, Bagheri improved to 6-3 while Mendoza fell to 8-3.
Bagheri scored two points with a takedown with 20 seconds left in the first period. Mendoza cut into the lead with an escape at the 1:58 mark of the second period, but the fifth ranked wrestler in Division II increased his lead to 4-1 with less a minute left in the second period. The senior wrestler took a 5-1 lead, a lead he would not relinquish, with an escape at the 1:02 mark of the last period to cut the Roadrunner margin to 8-3.
At 149, the Roadrunners' Dalton Kelley improved to 7-4 with an 11-6 decision over the Gators'
Conrad Snell.
Snell scored the first points of the match with a takedown at the 2:40 mark of the first period. Kelley came back with an escape but Snell once again recorded a takedown to take a 4-1 lead. The Roadrunner wrestler came back with an escape to send the match into the second period with Snell leading 4-2.
Kelley started off the second period with a three-point near fall to take a 5-4 lead. Snell ended the second period with a take down to retake the lead 6-5 heading into the final period. Kelley dominated the final period scoring six points on an escape, takedown and a three-point near fall (in the final seconds) to take the 11-6 victory and give Cal State Bakersfield an 11-3 lead.
At 157, Adam Fierro improved to 11-4 with a 20-4 technical fall decision over the Gators'
Daniel Flores in the 5:23 mark of the match to increase the hosts' lead to 16-3.
Isaiah Jimenez (who is sixth in the nation in Division II) won an exciting 6-5 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Daniel Meza to cut the Roadrunner lead to 16-6.
Meza opened up the scoring in his match with Jimenez with an escape at the 1:35 mark of the second period. Jimenez then recorded a two-point takedown but Meza escaped to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the final period.
Jimenez, who is now 4-3, took a 3-2 lead in the beginning of the third period. Meza came right back with a takedown to take a 4-3 lead, but Jimenez recorded an escape and a takedown to take a 6-3 lead with less than a minute left. The score remained 6-3 Jimenez until Meza recorded a point with an escape in the final seconds but Jimenez held on for the 6-5 win.
The Roadrunners took a 22-6 lead when Bryce Hammond (who is 15
th in the nation in Division I at 174) with a win by pin at the 2:06 mark over the Gators' AJ Simon. Cal State Bakersfield won by a major decision at 184 as Reuben Franklin recorded a 16-2 win over the Gators'
Calvin Nicholls.
In the most exciting match of the day,
Thomas Martin improved to 5-7 with a 3-2 decision over the Roadrunners' Frankie Hurtado at 197. Hurtado started the second with an escape in the beginning of the second period. The score remained Hurtado 1-0 until the beginning of the final period when Martin also recorded an escape.
Martin took a 3-1 lead with a takedown with 35 seconds left in the match. Hurtado cut the deficit in half with an escape with 10 seconds left on the clock, but Martin hung for the 3-2 victory.
In the final match of the dual, it was the Roadrunners' Sammy Cervantes winning by fall at 3:19 over SF State's Zach VonSteeg.
SF State is off until the New Year, when the Gators travel to Redding, Calif., on Thursday, January 3 for a 7pm starting non-conference dual with Simpson University. Then that weekend on January 6, SF State will have three duals in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with the University of Wyoming, Columbia University and Cal Poly beginning at 11:30am PST.
