Gators Split Two Duals on Senior Day

Zach Jimenez (184) was a double winner on Friday as the Gators split with CSU Bakersfield and Cal Baptist.
SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State wrestling team split its final two home matches of the 2011-12 regular season Friday, posting two late wins in a thrilling 20-16 come-from-behind victory over Division I CSU Bakersfield, before suffering a 22-10 setback at the hands of Cal Baptist as part of Senior Day festivities at The Swamp.

Daniel Flores (141), Isaiah Jimenez (165) and Zach Jimenez (184) each won twice for the Gators, whose record now stands at 4-9 on the year in dual-meet competition.

The Gators got off to an inauspicious start against Bakersfield, as Anthony Box posted a decisive 19-1 victory by technical fall in the 157-pound weight class to give the Roadrunners at quick 5-0 lead.

However, SF State fought back with three consecutive wins to jump in front 9-5 on the team scoreboard.  Isaiah Jimenez ignited the rally with a 9-5 decision over Adam Fierro in the 165-pound division, forging a sizeable 7-2 second-period lead on the strength of three takedowns and an escape.  Arman Ostadsharif soon followed with a narrow 3-2 triumph over Jesus Ambriz at 174, withstanding a late escape and stall warning to seal his seventh win of the year, while Zach Jimenez  managed an escape of his own in the waning seconds of the final period against Reuben Franklin at 184 to secure a tough 7-6 decision.

Bakersfield (2-7) reclaimed the momentum by capturing three of the next four bouts, including victories by major decision at 197 and 133 to vault in front by a 16-12 count. The Gators' lone win during that stretch was Anthony Gonzalez's 10-4 decision over Frankie Hurtado at heavyweight as the SF State senior took control early with a pair of first-period takedowns to cement his 12th victory of the season.

Trailing by four, the Gators trimmed the deficit to one at 16-15 after Daniel Flores' 5-2 decision over Justin Durham at 141, scoring a third-period takedown and riding time to offset a late reversal by his adversary.

The stage was then set for the pivotal match at 149 where Dylan Phillipy turned in a dominating 16-0 victory by technical fall over Erik Martinez as SF State abruptly halted a five-match slide in dual-meet action.  Leading 2-0, Phillipy broke things open with a trio of 3-point near falls in the second-period en route to his 16th win of the year.

The Gators were unable to re-create the same magic against Cal Baptist (9-4), which claimed seven of 10 matches, including five of the last six to pull away for the victory.

Isaiah Jimenez held on for a 5-4 decision over the Lancers' Preston Brown at 165, surviving two late escapes for his 17th victory of the year, while brother Zach Jimenez's 15-6 win by major decision over Kyle Matthews at 184 put the Purple and Gold briefly in front by a 7-6 margin.

However, the Lancers captured the ensuing four bouts to build an insurmountable 19-7 advantage they would not surrender.  Bryce Wilson's 3-1 sudden victory over Thomas Martin at 197 sparked the rally as the CBU junior notched a takedown with 14 seconds left in overtime.

The Gators tacked on their final points of the match when Flores prevailed by a 4-3 margin over Landon Saldana at 141, building a 4-1 cushion on the strength of a first-period takedown and a reversal in the second frame to help secure his team-leading 19th victory of the year.
