SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team received strong pitching and timely hitting to highlight its 4-1 victory in game two of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Friday at SF State.
With the win, the Gators salvaged a split after experiencing 5-1 setback in the opener to move to 8-22 on the season and 5-17 in conference action, while the Warriors stand at 12-27 overall and 5-17 as well in the CCAA.
In the nightcap, starter
Becky Nakano (2-3) tossed 6 1/3 solid innings, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks to nail down her second straight victory, while
Marisa Ibarra retired the final two batters for her second save of the season.
SF State never trailed in the contest after forging a 3-0 lead as
Courtney Gravel and
Jenna Wermes delivered run-scoring singles in the bottom of the second inning, while
Lucy Fernandez added a sacrifice fly in the third.
Stanislaus broke through in the top of the fifth when Lauren Liming led off with a double and touched home on Brittany Rickles' sacrifice fly shortly thereafter.
However, the Gators got the run back in the sixth when
Heather Jensen's two-out grounder rolled through the legs of Warrior second baseman Sarah Locarnini, allowing Wermes to score from second.
Following a strikeout to the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh, Nakano yielded a single to pinch-hitter Kiley Mendez and a walk to Liming, before handing the reins over to Ibarra, who was making her first appearance since March 10 due to illness. The SF State junior battled Kristan Burns, inducing a crucial foul out to the Warrior hitter, before striking out Brittany Rickles to end the game.
Stanislaus starter Natalie Rendon (3-12) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits and four walks in four innings of work, while game-one winner Brittani Weatherford pitched the final two frames.
Weatherford (7-10) tossed a complete game in the opener, limiting the Gators to just one run on four hits and two walks to go along with an RBI single at the plate, as the Warriors broke open a tight 2-1 ballgame with a three-run spurt in the fifth. Jordan Flora also knocked in pair with her eighth double of the season during the frame, which chased SF State starter
Ali Garcia.
Despite yielding no walks, Garcia (1-6) absorbed the defeat, surrendering all five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, before giving way to
Torrey Rook.
The Warriors drew first blood in the top of the second when Liming blasted her third homer of the season down the line in left field. The visitors then added another run in the fourth on Vanessa Del Toro's RBI grounder, before the Gators countered with their only score of the day in the bottom of the inning when pinch-runner
Kylie Herrada raced home from second on Fernandez's double to deep center field.
After Stanislaus' outburst in the fifth, Weatherford seized control in the circle, giving up just one hit over the final three frames. Flora finished with three of the Warriors' 10 hits, while Locarnini and Weatherford added two apiece in the victory.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play another doubleheader on Saturday; however, rain forecast for the Bay Area has prompted a postponement. The make-up date will be determined later.
