SEASIDE, Calif. – Despite two homers and four doubles, the San Francisco State softball team was unable to prevent a late 12-run outburst by No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay, falling by a 15-7 tally in the second game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Otter Sports Complex.

The Gators (14-30, 7-23 CCAA) came up empty in their final road trip of the season as the Otters (37-9, 22-6 CCAA), who clinched a berth in the CCAA tournament on Friday, claimed a 5-2 decision in the opener to sweep the weekend set.

In the nightcap, SF State trailed 3-0 entering the top of the fourth when it erupted for six runs on five hits after sending 11 batters to the plate.  Jordan Brenner knocked in a pair with a double to right-center field and promptly scored on Ashley Huff's sixth two-bagger of the season.  After a wild pitch, Kelsey Murakami drew a walk, while Kelly Mast followed with her first home run of the year on the very first pitch, putting the Gators up 6-3.

However, CSUMB knotted the score in the bottom of the frame as Danielle Onken scored when Angelina Orozco reached on a fielder's choice, while Alyssa Rivera drove in two with a double to left center.

The Otters kept the momentum in the fifth, plating seven runs on eight hits, highlighted by Skyler Valdivia's squeeze bunt and another two-run double by Rivera to build a commanding 13-6 advantage.

After Kylie Grabowski's solo homer in the top of the sixth, CSUMB ended the drama in the bottom of the inning when Nicole Pires smacked a two-run shot over the fence in left center, giving the hosts the run-rule victory.

Pires and Rivera contributed four RBI apiece, while Onken and Jackie Serna totaled four hits each to spark the Otters' 18-hit attack.  Conversely, SF State was paced by Brenner and Cara Spence, who finished with two hits apiece.

CSUMB's third reliever of the contest, Cori Reinhardt (17-3), who entered to record the final two outs in the fifth inning, picked up the victory, while Becky Nakano (5-7) absorbed the loss.

In game one, SF State loaded the bases in the top of the first inning when Huff hit an infield single, while Heather Jensen reached on a fielder's choice and Murakami drew a walk. Lucy Fernandez then got aboard on a CSUMB error, allowing Huff to race home to put the visitors up 1-0.  The Gators threatened to add to their total, but Otter starter Reinhardt received a double play flyout and a grounder to prevent further trouble.

CSUMB, which combined for six home runs in Friday's twin-bill, showed its penchant for the long ball once again in the bottom of the frame as Nina Villanueva connected for her 14th homer of the year, a two-run shot to left, putting the hosts up for good at 2-1.

The Otters extended the margin to 4-1 in the third when Jamie Moon scored on Serna's RBI single, while Reinhardt delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Gators narrowed the gap in the fifth on Jenna Wermes' solo homer right center, however, CSUMB answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Moon drew a bases-loaded walk, plating Reinhardt to complete the scoring.

Reinhardt (16-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing just three hits and two walks, while Marisa Ibarra (7-10) was saddled with the defeat the loss after giving up all five runs on nine hits and three walks in six innings of work.

SF State will close out the 2012 campaign with an eight-game homestand beginning Tuesday, April 17, with a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
