SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Sonoma State softball team once again received two impressive pitching performances from Samantha Lipperd to highlight its doubleheader sweep of San Francisco State on Saturday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season-finale for both squads. Buoyed by Lipperd's combined 15 strikeouts, the Seawolves posted a pair of 10-0 decisions to spoil the Gators' Senior Day festivities, with the latter lasting five innings due to the run rule.
With the results, the Gators ended the 2012 campaign with a 17-35 overall record and a 9-27 mark in conference play, while the Seawolves, who remain in the hunt for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, finish at 35-17 and 21-15 in the CCAA.
Lipperd held the Gators hitless in game one until
Kelly Mast led off the sixth inning with a single to left field.
Ashley Huff was the only other SF State batter to reach base in the contest after getting hit by a pitch in the fifth and drawing a base on balls in the seventh.
Shannon Kehr went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, while Keisi Chinen smacked a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to give SSU a 5-0 lead. The visitors then added to their final tally with five markers in the seventh, capped by a Kehr's two-run double and a sacrifice fly by Danielle D'Eccliss.
Marisa Ibarra (7-12) took the loss for SF State, allowing two runs in 2/3 innings, before giving way to
Ali Garcia due to injury.
Cara Spence made her first-ever collegiate appearance in the pitching circle for the Gators, recording the final three outs in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Lipperd (30-10) wasn't as sharp as her previous three starts on the weekend as the Gators finished with eight hits on the game, including two apiece by Huff and
Jenna Wermes. However, SSU gave its ace plenty of support, blowing the game open with five runs in the third inning, including another two-run blast by Chinen and D'Eccliss' RBI double.
SF State had a chance to break its weekend scoring drought after loading the bases in the third as
Courtney Gravel reached on a fielder's choice sandwiched around singles by
Kelsey Murakami and Wermes. However with two outs, Lipperd induced a pop-foul to end the threat.
Lipperd fanned six hitters in the contest, raising her Division II-leading strikeout total to 375, while
Becky Nakano (6-10) absorbed the loss for the Gators.
Prior to Saturday's games, SF State celebrated the accomplishments of both team's seniors, including its own
Kylie Herrada,
Heather Jensen,
Kelly Mast and
Jenna Wermes.
