Gators unable to hold off Lumberjacks

Lucy Fernandez finished the day with four hits, including three in the nightcap against Humboldt State.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO --- After registering just two hits in the first game, SF State came back to knock eight hits in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Humboldt State Lumberjacks. The Gators (13-16, 7-13) dropped Saturday's doubleheader 1-0 and 6-1 to surrender the California Collegiate Athletic Association series to the conference-leading Jacks (24-9, 16-4).

Lucy Fernandez led the Gators with a 4-for-7 showing at the plate, grabbing three hits in the nightcaps. Kylie Grabowski also posted hits in both games, finishing 2-for-6 on the day, and scored the lone run for SF State. In the circle, Marisa Ibarra struck out three batters and Emily Gibson followed with two knockouts in the nightcap.

Both teams struggled to put together hits in their first chances at bat, with HSU grabbing the first hit of the day. The Jacks capitalized in the top of the third, scoring one run off three hits to take a 1-0 lead. Humboldt State looked to add more runs in the fourth, but the Gators buckeled down on defense and made key stops, including a diving catch from Jennifer Lewis in right field.

SF State finally found its first hit in the bottom of the fourth when Fernandez sent a hard hit to the gap between HSU's Andrea Chavez at shortstop and second base. The ball took a bounce that threw Chavez off, making it hard for the Lumberjack to control the ball and allow Fernandez to reach first. Courtney Gravel joined Fernandez on base in the next play, taking advantage of an HSU error to put runners on first and second, but the pair were left stranded as the Jacks found three outs to end the inning.

Needing to hold the Jacks in the top of the seventh, Ibarra struck out back-to-back batters to start the inning and Gravel and Kelsey Murakami teammed up to end the inning with the third out. With desperation kicking in, Grabowski doubled deep to left field with one out to try to get a rally going. Gabby Reta took over pinch running and was joined on base by Cara Spence with a free walk to first. Despite the tying and go-ahead runs on base, the Gators couldn't send the runners in to drop the opener 1-0.

The Jacks started the nightcap with a bang, scoring three runs off three hits, including two off Julie Pena's double to deep right.

Trailing 3-0, Grabowski singled right up the middle to start the bottom of the second. Lewis joined her on base with a walk to first with no outs. Spence pushed the runners up a base, but couldn't reach first safely to load the bases. With two outs, Sarah Catania singled up the middle to score Grabowski at third, but was picked off at first to end the inning before the Gators could get momentum building.

The Gators took to the field in the next half inning and took the Jacks down in order to head back into the dugout on offense. With one out, Ashley Huff walked and advanced to third off Fernandez's single through a gap on the left side, running to second on the throw. Gravel took ball four to load the bases, but the Jacks held on to their shutout as they grabbed back-to-back outs to end the inning unscathed.

In the top of the fifth and sixth innings, Humboldt State showed why it leads the nation in home runs as two different Lumberjacks hit long balls. Dani Randall sent one just right of dead center in the fifth and Stalf hit a two-run homer over the fence at left to set a new CCAA career home run record with 42 home runs and give HSU a 6-1 lead.

Despite putting runners on bases in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, the Gators couldn't find any more runs to end the nightcap with the 6-1 defeat.

SF State head out on the road for the next two weeks to face CCAA opponent UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday, before heading to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions, hoping to get back to the strong start the Gators opened the season with.
