Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO --- Building off a successful day on defense Friday afternoon, the SF State Gators turned around to claim back-to-back wins Saturday. The wins lift the Gators 11-10 overall, 7-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as SF State takes the series 3-1 from No. 5-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-7, 7-5 CCAA).
Marisa Ibarra picked up her eighth win of the season in the first game, helping the Gators post a 5-2 win, while
Emily Gibson grabbed her third victory from the circle, keeping the Toros scoreless in a 2-0 nightcap Gator result.
The Toros scored first in the top of the second, capitalizing on a two-out rally. With a runner on first, Kaci McGinnis doubled deep down the right field line to give CSUDH the 1-0 lead. Adriana Sanchez extended the Toros' lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth off her 10th homer of the season.
SF State initiated its own two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. After the Toros took the first two batters out,
Courtney Gravel singled to start the rally.
Kylie Grabowski followed with a base hit of her own in the gap to left field to put the tying runners on first and second.
Jennifer Lewis stepped up to the plate and found a hole in right field to score Gravel from second, cutting the Toros' lead down to one run.
Cara Spence added another single to load up the bases, bringing life into the SF State dugout.
Kelsey Murakami laid down a pitch in the dirt, but CSUDH's third baseman couldn't collect the ball, allowing each runner to advance a base, including Lewis from third for the tying run.
Sarah Catania kept the two-out rally alive with a single to left field, just in front of the outfielder's glove, to send the go-ahead run into the plate. With the 3-2 lead,
Marisa Andrade took her turn at bat and knocked a base hit deep to righ, past a diving attempt from the right fielder, to send two runners in and give the Gators the 5-2 lead. The Toros managed to find the third out, but couldn't produce on offense to end the game 5-2 in favor of SF State.
Hoping to use the first game's momentum,
Lucy Fernandez opened the bottom of the first with her third home run of the season to give the Gators a quick 1-0 lead. Fernandez tucked the long ball just inside of the left field foul pole.
The Toros looked to respond in the next half inning, but the Gators keyed up on defense to end the inning without surrendering a run. Lewis, who had been playing in the outfield to start the season, filled in for an injured Gravel at shortstop and made a diving stop for the third out.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lewis beat out a short throw from the Toros' shortstop to reach first safely. Spence walked and
Brittany Barcellos also took a free trip to first to load the bases. With two outs and runners on every base,
Ashley Huff hit a hard single to the second baseman. The Toros tried to make the play at second, but couldn't make the throw in time, allowing Lewis to score from third and put the Gators up 2-0.
Defense held the Toros off the scoreboard, despite CSUDH posting seven hits in the nightcap. In the top of the sixth, Murakami made a diving stop to assist a putout for the first out and outfielders Catania and Barcellos each caught flies to end the inning unscathed.
Needing two runs to keep the game going, CSUDH stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh. Lewis made another clutch diving effort for the first out and Murakami fielded a grounder for the second. With tying runners on second and third, Christina Chavez stepped into the batters box with a last-ditch effort, sending the ball high into center, but Barcellos easily snagged the fly to secure the 2-0 win.
The Gators take a break from CCAA action as they head to Notre Dame de Namur for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, before returning home to host Dominican on Sunday, March 17. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m.
