Turlock, Calif. – The SF State track and field team kicked off the 2014 outdoor track and field season at the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday at the Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium. The severe wind conditions made for some rough outings but the Gators persevered highlighted by
Kareezia Younger' second place finish in the high jump,
Alex Jones second place finish in the shot put, and
Ashley Black's third place finish in the long jump.
"Even though weather conditions weren't ideal, the rain held off and we had some good performances," said assistant coach Nichole Schutte. "
Alex Jones placed second in the shot put, our sprinters go their first outdoor race under their belt, and
Ashley Black finished third in the long jump."
In the 100m sprints the Gators had eight athletes competing. Senior
Brionne Baucham finished in the top spot for the Gators and was seventh overall, with a time of 13:12.
Hilary King finished ninth overall with a time of 13:61. A trio of Gators placed 21-23
rd with
Laura Stokes finishing with a time of 14:20, behind her was
Erica Hayes at 14:26 and
Angel Hill at 14:23.
Jazmine Tyler placed 28
th with a time of 14:50, behind her was
Jordan Guerrero in 29
th with a time of 14:52 and
Marina Tucker came in 35
th with a time of 15:44.
In the 200m sprints Younger finished 20
th with a time of 27:72,
Erica Hayes finished in 27
th with a time of 29:31 and Tucker placed 30
th with a time of 31:31.
"Today was a tough day with a huge head wind for jumpers and sprinters," added Schutte. "But they battled and learned how to compete today."
In the 4x100 spring the SF State "A" group placed fifth with a time of 49:66, running in the "A" group was
Hilary King,
Ashley Black,
Brionne Baucham, and
Laura Stokes. The "B" group placed eighth with a time of 52:46. Running in that group was Tucker, Hayes, Tyler and Hill.
In the 4x400 The Gators placed 10
th with a time of 4:14.75, competing for SFSU in the 4x400 was Black,
Jordan Guerrero, Baucham, and Stokes.
In the high jump
Kareezia Younger placed second overall with a height of 1.50m (4'11"), finishing in first was Fresno Pacific's Sarah Hill who cleared 1.75m (5-8.75").
In the long jump the Gators had four athletes compete, with Black placing third with a distance of 5.10m (16' 8.75"). In fifth was
Ruth Le Beau covering 4.91m (16' 1.50"). Just behind her was
Hilary King jumping 4.80m (15' 9.00"). In eighth was
Angel Hill who jumped a distance of 4.70m (15' 5.00").
In the triple jump Hill placed fifth overall with a distance of 10.30m (33' 9.50").
In shot put
Alex Jones finished second overall with a throw of 10.83m (35' 6.50"). In eighth was
Michelle Chung who threw the shot 10.08m (33' 1.00").
The discuss came next with Chung placing 10
th overall with a throw of 31.24m (102' 6"), Jones finished 32
nd with a throw of 22.50m (73' 10").
In the hammer throw Chung placed 13
th with a throw of 35.74m (117' 3") while Jones placed 23
rd with a throw of 29.22m (95' 10").
In the final even for the Gators,
Ruth Le Beau finished 17
th in the javelin, with a throw of 22.49m (73' 9"), Jenni Albee finished 19
th overall with a throw of 21.00m (68' 11").
The Gators will return to action to Turlock next week when they compete in the Stanislaus Open hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
