Box Score 2 San Francisco, Calif. – Facing their second-straight ranked opponent the SF State softball team received a solid performance from its pitching staff, ultimately the Gators were held to three runs over two games as the Red Storm took both halves of Tuesday's non-conference double header 4-2 and 4-1.
In the first game of the afternoon the Gators (7-16) scored first in the bottom of the first inning. It marked the fifth-straight game the Gators offense struck the first blow.
Courtney Gravel led off the inning with a single up the middle. It was the first of her four hits on the day.
She moved over to second on the perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by
Selina Rodriguez.
Jennifer Lewis followed that up with a single up the middle to move Gravel to third who came around to score on the squeeze bunt by
Lucy Fernandez.
Game one's starting pitcher
Emily Gibson (4-7) did her best to make that run hold up, she limited the Red Storm to just four runs over seven innings. Dixie State (17-6) entered today's contest averaging over 7.1 runs per game.
Through 5.1 innings Gibson held Dixie State to just one run when a defensive miscue led to a big inning for the Red Storm. In the sixth inning Gibson allowed a fly ball to center field that got over the head of Lewis that plated a pair of runs, a two out single plated the third run that would be more than enough for Dixie State to hold onto the win.
Gibson finished the game going seven complete, allowing 10 hits, four runs, all earned with a walk and two strike outs.
DSU's starter Aryn Feickert (7-4) rebounded after surrendering the opening run, she limited the Gators to just four hits and six scoreless innings the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
In game two the Red Storm scored a run in the first inning on three hits, a strong defensive play by starter
Megan Clark kept the inning from spinning out of control by fielding a sharply hit ground ball and flipping it to the catcher
Kylie Grabowski to nail the runner at the plate. The Red Storm scored a run on an RBI base hit by designated player Brooklyn Beardshear to go up 1-0.
DSU added a runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, scoring four runs on 13 hits for the afternoon. In the top of the fifth an RBI double by Rochelle Jenkins ended the day for Gibson who pitched 4.1 innings allowing nine hits, three runs, two earned with a walk and two strike outs.
Jenny Obbema pitched the final 2.2 innings and scattered four hits, 1 run, with a walk.
The Gators mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring their lone run when Gravel scored on a single from Fernandez. The inning ended on a hard hit ground ball to second by Grabowski that would have scored a run.
Fernandez finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI. Also collecting a hit was
Aryn Guzman and
Gabby Reta who both went 1-for-3 in both games. Lewis collected a pair of hits on the day as well.
The Gators return to action on Saturday when they host No. 3 Cal Baptist for a non-conference double header starting at 1:00 p.m. at SF State Softball Field, live stats and video will be available for both games.
