Isaiah Hurtado placed 8
th at the 2013-14 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships at the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio. With his eighth place finish, Hurtado becomes the 62
nd All-American under the direction of head coach
Lars Jensen and 89
th overall in Gator wrestling history.
Hurtado lost his first match this morning in the consolation quarterfinals by an 8-2 decision to Kutztown's Evan Yenolevich, who placed 6th. Then in the 7
th place match, the Gator senior lost by fall (2:12) to Ouachita Baptist's Nathan Rodriguez.
The Sacramento native started his weekend with a 12-10 decision over Upper Iowa's Matt Paulus in the First Round. In the quarterfinals, Hurtado lost by a 6-2 decision to McKendree's Brenden Murphy (who finished in 5
th place). He came back and defeated Southwest Minnesota State's Justin Reinsma by a 3-2 decision in the consolation second round to advance to this morning's matches.
Hurtado finished his senior season with a 32-11 record.
SF State also had two other wrestlers that qualified for the Nationals in Zack Jimenez (184) and
Andrew Reggi (197).
Jimenez lost his first match by an 8-4 decision to Notre Dame's Garrett Lineberger. Lineberger will be wrestling for the title later on this evening.
The Gator senior was then eliminated by Lindenwood's John McArdle by an 11-5 decision in the consolation first round.
Reggi started his day yesterday losing by an 18-1 technical fall (7:00) to Upper Iowa's Carl Broghamme (who will be wrestling later on this afternoon). He came and defeated Newberry's Joe Grisko by a 4-0 decision in the consolation first round.
The junior wrestler then fell by fall to Ashland's Joe Brandt, who is wrestling for 5
th place, in the final seconds of the match.
Heading into today's matches, the Gators as a team were tied for 28
th place.
Heading into the finals of the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships, which will start at 7pm EDT this evening, the Gators are tied for 28 points with Southwest Minnesota State and Adams State. Notre Dame (Ohio) won the team title.
