Gators’ Aces Too Much For Warriors in Wednesday’s Sweep

Freshman Megan Clark threw a complete game shutout and also went 3-for-3 at the plate as the Gators swept the Warriors on Wednesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Francisco, Calif. – It was going to take a special effort on the part of freshman starter Megan Clark to match what game one starter Emily Gibson did, but she just might have done it as the young lefty threw a three hit shutout and also collected three hits as the Gators swept Cal State Stanislaus winning game one 3-2 in 10 innings and game two 8-0 in five innings.

In game one Gibson got the Gators impressive day off to a strong start throwing a career-best 10 innings en-route to her fifth win of the season.  The sophomore scattered 14 hits, two earned runs with three walks and two strike outs.

She matched the Warriors' (10-19/6-13 CCAA) starter Karina Callazo inning after inning.  Cal State Stanislaus struck first, scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning when shortstop Brittany Rickles led off with a single to left field, and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.

The Gators (9-18/5-11 CCAA) played the role of the cardiac kids, scoring their first run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Selina Rodriguez started the rally when she beat out an infield hit to short.  A sac-bunt by Jennifer Lewis put the Gators in a position to tie the game as Rodriguez took second.

Following the sacrifice Lucy Fernandez doubled to left center field on a towering hit scoring Rodriguez to tie the game at one.  The Warriors sent the game into extra innings when Fernandez was thrown out at home trying to score from second base on the single from Kelsey Murakami.

Gibson did her part throwing up two more scoreless innings before the Warriors scored a run to briefly break the tie.  CSUS first baseman Brianna Nicholson led off the 10th inning with a single up the middle; a sac bunt advanced her to second and eventually moved to third on a base hit to right field.  The Warriors eventually loaded the bases with one out and scored the go-ahead run on fielder's choice.

Just like they did in the bottom of the seventh, the Gators once again rallied in their final at bat. Catcher Kylie Grabowski led off the winning rally with a single down the right field line; it was the second of her two hits in game one.  Clark game into the game to pinch run for Grabowski and moved to second on the sac-bunt by Hanna Miller. Aryn Guzman collected the big hit the Gators have needed all season with a double to left center field that scored Clark easily to tie the game at two.

The tie did not last long as Gravel singled up the middle with two outs allowing Guzman to score easily for the walk off.

Taking the loss for the Warriors in game one was relief pitcher Jessica Varady who threw 1.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, with no walks or strike outs.  Callazo went eight innings, scattering seven hits, with a run scored, four walks and five strike outs.

In the night cap it was all Gators, as Clark (3-6) shut down the Warriors, holding them to three hits over five innings, with a walk and three strike outs.

Offensively the Gators pounded CSUS' starter Natalie Rendon, who lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, eight runs, seven earned with five walks and one strike out.
The Gators scored a run in the first, three in the second, one in the third and three again in the fifth.  The final run coming on a two-out base hit from Grabowski to send the fans home happy.

Eight starters had hits for the Gators in the second game, highlighted by Clark's perfect 3-for-3 performance with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.  Also collecting multiple hits on the afternoon was Jennifer Lewis who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two runs driven in.  Fernandez finished the day going 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a bases clearing double to blow the game open in the bottom of the second.  Murakami finished with a pair of hits as did Grabowski.

The Gators return to action on Friday at 1:00 p.m. when the Gators start a four-game CCAA series against Chico State.  Live stats will be available for all four games on Friday and Saturday.
