Gators End Up On Wrong End of Tough Pitching Matchup

Senior catcher Kylie Grabowski provided the Gators with their lone run on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Francisco, Calif. – The SF State softball team found itself on the wrong end of a tough pitching matchup, as the Chico State Wildcats took both halves of Friday's CCAA double header, losing game one 2-0 and the night cap 2-1.  The Gators were not without their opportunities however, as they had 16 base runners reach on the day.

Game one's starter for SF State (9-20/5-13 CCAA) was sophomore Emily Gibson (5-9) who is fresh off a dominating 10 inning performance last Wednesday.  She showed no signs of fatigue as she once again went the distance, throwing her team-leading eighth complete game of the season.

She did not surrender a hit until the top of the fourth inning, starting the game just one over the minimum the first time through the order.

In the top of the sixth inning she finally ran into some trouble.  The Wildcats (14-11/10-8 CCAA) led off the fateful inning with a one-out double to left field off the bat of shortstop Emily McEnaney, first base man Desiree' Gonzalez followed that up with a two run home run over the left center field fence to put the Wildcats out front for good.

SF State had their chances, the Gators put nine runners on base, loading the bags on three separate occasions, but all three times starter Alex Molina (6-6) escaped the jam.  For the afternoon, Molina's line was a four hit, complete game shutout, with five walks.

Gibson matched with seven innings of quality work, scattering four hits, two earned runs, with three walks and two strike outs.

In the nightcap the Wildcats struck early against starter Megan Clark (3-7).  Chico State scored in the opening frame when speedy center fielder Alli Cook beat out an infield single hit toward second, she moved into scoring position on a stolen base and scored on McEnaney's double.

In the top of the second inning the Wildcats added the insurance run in the top of the second when Gators' right fielder Aryn Guzman couldn't hold on to a ball hit down the right field line.  The error allowed catcher Brynn Lesovsky to score from second.

Clark settled down however, and limited the Wild Cats to just the two runs, while holding them to eight hits over seven innings for her third-straight complete game with no walks and six strike outs, the six punch-outs ties a career-high.  Over her last three starts Clark has a microscopic 0.35 ERA.

The Gators scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning when catcher Kylie Grabowski hit a deep fly ball to left field that scored Jennifer Lewis from third.  Lewis, and Selina Rodriguez finished the game with a pair of hits to lead the Gators, also recording a hit was Courtney Gravel who went 1-for-4 and Lucy Fernandez and Kelsey Murakami who both went 1-for-3.

Earning the win in game two for the Wildcats was starter Brooke Langeloh (4-1) who went seven innings, scattering seven hits, with a run a walk and four strike outs.

The Gators and Wildcats will resume the series tomorrow, with the double header starting at noon at the SF State softball field.
