Box Score 2 McKinleyville, Calif. – The SF State softball team had two on with two out trailing by a run in game one of the Saturday's double header against No. 7 Humboldt State, however, the Jacks were able to get out of the jam as they took both games to win the series, winning game one 7-6 and the nightcap 5-2.
Taking the loss for the Gators (7-14/3-11 CCAA) in both games was sophomore starter
Emily Gibson who pitched better than the numbers indicated. In the opening game she went the distance going 6.0 innings, surrendering nine hits, seven runs, four earned with a walk and two strike outs.
The big hit that hurt Gibson (4-6) was the two-out grand slam she surrendered to Dani Randall that put the Lumberjacks out front for good.
Humboldt State (21-6/11-5 CCAA) built its lead to four, 7-3, following the bottom of the fifth inning in which they scored a run on a two hits and an error. From there the Gators made their run, scoring a run on two hits in the sixth and two runs on two hits in the seventh.
Courtney Gravel led off the inning with a double to right center,
Selina Rodriguez reached on an error by the third baseman which put runners on the corners for the Gators.
Jennifer Lewis grounded out to third, allowing Gravel to score and moved Rodriguez to second.
The rally continued with a single by Luci Fernandez once again putting runners at the corners for the Gators.
Kylie Grabowski hit a shot to third that was fumbled allowing her to reach safely and scored Rodriguez. However with two on and two outs that's where the rally ended, as HSU's starting pitcher Madison Williams (6-0) got pinch hitter Gaby Reta to pop up to short.
In the night cap once again Gibson took the ball for the Gators, and for the second time in the series she faced Katie Obbema. This time however, the Lumberjacks' Obbema would get the win as she out-dueled the Gators starter for her 10
th win of the season.
The Gators scored a pair of run in the top of the first as they did the first time they faced K. Obbema. However, this time she settled down to go the distance, scattering six hits, two runs no earned with three strike outs.
Gibson went four complete, surrendering seven hits, five runs, four earned with two walk and four strike outs.
In an interesting twist of events, for the first time in their lives twins Katie and
Jenny Obbema, who were born 12 minutes apart, squared off against each other in a game.
Jenny Obbema entered the game for the Gators in the fifth inning and pitched two scoreless innings for the Gators in relief, scattering a pair of hits while tallying a strike out.
In the top of the first inning
Selina Rodriguez singled to start the scoring rally, she moved to second on the base hit by Fernandez. Grabowski reached on an error by second base allowing Rodriguez to score,
Kelsey Murakami singled up the middle that scored Fernandez.
At the plate on the day the Gators collected 16 hits as a squad. Gravel went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, Rodriguez went 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI,
Kylie Grabowski went 2-for-7 with four RBI's on the afternoon, and Murakami went 2-for-6 with a run batted in.
Jennifer Lewis and Aryan Guzman also had a hit on the day.
The Gators return home and will host Dixie State on Tuesday. First pitch for game one of the midweek double header is slated for 1:00 p.m. with game two following a half hour after the first games completion.
