Rodriguez Sends Gators Home Happy In Marathon Versus Tritons

The Gators held their annual Strike Out Cancer day as SF State earned a split with No. 15 UC San Diego.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Francisco – It took 13 innings but when Selina Rodriguez shot a ball into right center field scoring Aryn Guzman, it ended an instant classic for SF State, as the Gators earned a split with No. 15 UC San Diego, winning 2-1.  The Tritons took game one of Saturday's doubleheader 8-2 as the two teams split the series.

For the second time in as many days, starter Megan Clark (8-11) was the rock for the Gators (17-30/8-20 CCAA) going the distance, holding the Tritons scoreless for the final 12 innings to earn the win.  For the weekend, Clark threw 20.0 innings against the top team in the conference, and held UCSD to 14 hits, one run, with a walk and five strike outs.

Today, she refused to give in, UC San Diego (30-9/19-5 CCAA) scored their lone run in the game in the top of the first inning.  Speedy Callie Grant led off with a single through the right side on a 0-2 count.  She came around to score on the one out double by Caitlin Brown.  From there Clark was ferocious, holding the Tritons to 10 hits and no runs over the final 12 innings
.
For a while it looked like the one run would hold up giving the win to Triton's starter Jennifer Manuel, however in the bottom of the sixth inning the Gators got on the board.  Chelsea Brent drew a seven-pitch walk to start things off.  Brent would play a crucial role for the Gators in the win.  She scored all the way from first on the perfectly executed hit-and-run double to right center field by Rodriguez, the first of her two RBI's in the game.

That would be all for Manuel who pitched 5.1 innings holding the Gators to three hits, the lone run, with three walks and four strike outs.  Taking the ball for UCSD the rest of the way was game one starter Alexis Edwards (17-4) who for the second time would fall victim to Clark.

Edwards threw 7.1 innings, holding SF State to four hits, one run with a pair of strike outs.  In the bottom half of the 13th the Gators finally tallied the winning run.  Guzman started the rally, hitting a single up the middle with one out. Brent did her job laying down a perfect bunt against the defense to move Guzman into scoring position.  Kelsey Murakami hit an infield single that died between the pitcher and second to put runners at the corners for Rodriguez who jumped all over the first pitch Edwards threw to for a single to center field to score Guzman.

Helping Clark throughout the day was spectacular defense, specifically the play from the outfield.  In the top of the eighth inning the Tritons got the leadoff hitter on board, reaching on a bunt, the next batter hit a shallow fly ball to left field where left fielder Gabby Reta made a shoestring catch and came up throwing to first for the 7-3 double play.

Not to be outdone, fellow corner outfielder Guzman saved Clark in the top of the 13th, an error on Jennifer Lewis at short allowed the leadoff hitter to reach, the next batter hit a line drive to Guzman's right who caught it on the run and came up throwing easily getting the batter at first for the 9-3 double play killing the threat.

In the first game it was all UC San Diego as the Tritons jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first, and four in the second.  Courtney Dunkel (2-4) took the loss, going just an 1.2, surrendering three hits, five runs, none earned with a walk.

Jenny Obbema pitched an 1.1 allowing seven hits, two runs, none earned before handing the ball over to Emily Gibson who held the Tritons to just one run over four innings.

Rodriguez and Lewis both recorded RBIs in the bottom of the third, Rodriguez with a single up the middle and Lewis after drawing a bases loaded walk.

The Tritons went on to score another run in the seventh, giving them eight runs on 15 hits in game one, while the Gators were limited to two runs on seven hits.

Saturday's double header was the Gators annual Strike Out Cancer day, in between games one and two the two teams sponsored a ball toss, with all the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

The Gators will return to action Friday, April 18 as they make their way down South playing Cal State San Bernardino for a four-game series starting at 1:00 p.m.
