Gators Finish Fifth at CCAA Championships, Cabiness Named Athlete of the Year

Maya Cabiness and Janesha Anthony share the podium, as they took first and second in the 100m sprint on Saturday.
La Jolla – With the completion of the third day of the CCAA Championship hosted by UC San Diego at the Triton Track and Field Stadium, the Gators once again had an outstanding day.  As a team, SF State finished fifth overall with a total team score of 76.16.  Individually three more athletes received all-conference honors, highlighted by Maya Cabiness who was named the CCAA Female Track Athlete of the Year.

"This was a fantastic weekend for SF State track and field," said interim head coach Tom Lyons.  "I am very happy with how the women approached and competed at the championships.  Plenty of season and lifetime bests to go with national level marks were set this weekend.  The individual and team success today is a result of how well this group encourages and pushes each other over all event groups."

The impressive day for Cabiness started by taking second in the 100m dash, she finished with a time of 12:14 to earn All-CCAA honors.  The only person to beat her was teammate Janesha Anthony who finished just ahead of Cabiness with a time of 12:01 to earn All-CCAA accolades as well.

Cabiness liked the view from the podium so much, she followed up her impressive showing in the 100 by winning the 400m hurdles, clocking in with a new personal-record time of 60.32 to earn her second all-conference selection of the meet.

Laura Stokes placed eighth in the 100m hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.36 to earn the Gators a point.

The 4x100 combo of Anthony, Cabiness, Brionne Baucham, and Stokes placed second with a time of 46.93, just behind Chico State who took home the gold.  In the 4x400 relay, the Gators placed fifth overall with a time of 3:55.77.

In the high jump, Ashley Black continued her breakout performance on the conference stage, placing fifth overall, clearing the bar at 1.63m (5-4.25").  She finished in a four way tie for second, but fell to fifth in with the tie breaker.  Kareezia Younger placed eighth overall, clearing the bar at 1.58m (5-2.25").

Jazmine Tyler finished just outside of the points in the pole vault, placing ninth clearing the bar set at 3.06m (10-0.50"), the distance a season-high for Tyler.
In the triple jump Ruth Le Beau took eighth with a leap of 11.04m (36-2.75").

Alex Jones placed third in the shot put, with a season-best throw of 12.92m (42-4.75), making her the third Gator of the day to earn all-conference honors.  Michelle Chung placed 12th with a throw of 10.88m (35-8.50").

In the hammer, Chung just missed out on earning all-conference honors, with a four place finish following her throw of 48.39m (158-09).

The Gators will return to action next weekend when they will participate in the USF WCC All-Comers Meet hosted on the SF State campus at Cox Stadium.
