SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's volleyball team begins its regular season slate of conference matches this week when the Gators travel to Turlock, Calif. to take on Stanislaus State at Fitzpatrick Arena at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. They wrap up the week hosting Cal State East Bay on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
The Gators enter this week with a 2-5 record after going 2-1 last weekend. SF State earned back-to-back sweeps over Fresno Pacific and Holy Names before falling to Dominican in four sets at home on Saturday. As a team, the Gators are averaging 11.4 kills per set and hitting .144, their opponent's are averaging 13.8 kills per set and hitting .225.
Last week, the Gators had several players set new career-bests. Starting off the impressive week was the play by freshman opposite
Chantelle Williams. Since entering the starting lineup against Colorado Mesa on Sept. 5, Williams leads the team with 43 kills, averaging 2.69 kills per set, while hitting .257.
Sophomore outside hitter
Marisa Rojo was fantastic off the bench for the Gators in two matches for SF State last week. In the straight-sets win over Holy Names on Friday, Rojo recorded a career-high seven kills, on 17 swings for a .353 attack percentage. The next night, against Dominican, she once again provided a big life coming off the bench, recording six kills on a career-high 37attempts, while grabbing eight digs.
Catherine Feathers recorded her second career double-double on Saturday against the Penguins. In four sets she finished with 32 assists and a career-best 14 digs.
Senior outside hitter
Jaclyn Clark was named the Female Gator of the Week for her performance against the Penguins on Saturday. For the third time in her career, Clark reached the 20 kill plateau, on Saturday she finished with a career-best 21 kills. Through seven matches, Clark leads the Gators balanced attack with 58 kills, averaging 2.52 kills per set. She is one of four Gators to average two or more kills per set.
Stanislaus State enters Tuesdays contest with a perfect 6-0 record. The Warriors went 2-0 last week with a straight-sets victory on the road over Cal State Monterey Bay and a four set win at home against UC Merced.
As a team, the Warriors are averaging 14.5 kills per set which ranks second in the CCAA. They are hitting .262 as a team, which is third in the conference. Their opponents are averaging 11.3 kills per set and are hitting .145.
Leading the team is junior middle blocker Taylor Massengale, who is tops on the squad with 73 kills, averaging 3.32 kills per set while hitting an impressive .428. Running the attack is junior setter Maddi Seidl who has 224 assists on the year, averaging 10.67 assists per set.
Cal State East Bay enters this week with a 2-6 record, last week they went 1-3 at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino with a four set win over Ft. Lewis in the tournament finale. As a team, they are averaging 12.4 kills per set while hitting .182, their opponents are averaging 13.8 kills per set while hitting .255.
