WRE | Gators Reassert Dominance of Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team reasserted the team's dominance over Menlo College with a 32-10 victory on Thursday night at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

With the win, SF State finishes the regular season at 6-4. The Oaks, an NAIA powerhouse currently ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, fall to . The Oaks scored a surprising 20-19 decision on the Gators' home mat a year ago and the Gators returned the favor on Thursday night. SF State has now won 10 of the teams' 11 meetings dating back to 2008.

"I always want us pushing the pace, always attacking, always being aggressive. It's a great momentum win for us but win or lose we're being aggressive and getting better," said Head Coach Jason Welch. "I'm happy to have momentum and it's another step toward regionals. It's postseason, it's time to have some fun."

On Thurdsay night, SF State guaranteed a win in the dual with wins in the first six bouts. The Gators got off to a 6-0 start after Christian Ramos won by forfeit at 125 lb. At 133 lb., Nathan Cervantez scored an escape in the closing seconds of the third period and won in overtime with a takedown. Joshua Villaflor got the start and kept things rolling with his pin of Devin Everk at 141 lb. Kurtis Clem picked up a victory in his first duals appearance at 149 lb. Mason Boutain won the 157 lb. bout by injury default after Kevin James was unable to continue due to cramps and Romeo Medina-Ontiveros guaranteed a win with a major decision at 165 lb.

SF State dropped the 174, 184, and 197 bouts to a trio of Menlo wrestlers who are ranked in the Top 20 in their respective weight classes in the NAIA. The Gators ended with a win from heavyweight Sam Alnassiri, who's ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II. He edged Javier Gonzalez, who is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA.
