CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — San Francisco State wrestlers
Nathan Cervantez and
Brandon Vu are set to compete at the 2018 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships at the US Cellular Center, hosted by Upper Iowa University.
Cervantez enters as the No. 5-ranked wrestler in the 133-lb. weight class. He boasts an impressive 24-5 record entering competition on Friday. He has put together win streaks of six or more wins three times this season. His most recent winning streak was a seven-bout streak that was snapped in the RMAC Championship bout versus Bryce Shoemaker of Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers are currently ranked No. 7 in the country with Shoemaker ranked fourth individually. Cervantez will open up Nationlas versus No. 12 Adam Hedin of No. 1 St. Cloud State 19-7.
Vu enters Nationals with a 21-10 mark. The redshirt junior has had a bounce-back season after missing last season due to injury. The Fairfield, California native overcame a slow start. As of Jan. 13, he stood at 5-6 but then won his next eight bouts, three of which came by tech fall and three of which came by major decision. He also had one pin and an overtime win during that win streak. He finished fourth at the RMAC Championships to earn his spot at Nationals. Vu will open against No. 2 Ivan McClay (27-6) of No. 2 Notre Dame (OH).
In just his first year on the job, Head Coach
Jason Welch has brought the Gators back to national prominence. For the first time since March 2014, the Gators found themselves in the Top 25 this season (they are currently receiving votes). The Gators also had three individual champions at the RMAC Championships (Vu, Cervantez, and 157-lb.
Mason Boutain), and finished 6-4 in duals.
