LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - The awards keep coming for San Francisco State softball standout Brylynn Vallejos, who was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Second Team. Vallejos becomes the first freshman in program history to earn this prestigious award and first overall since 2007.
"Earlier in the year, Brylynn and I discussed some team and individual goals she had wanted to achieve in which she had set the bar high for herself by wanting to be an All-American," said Head Coach Alicia Reid. "I had no doubt during this conversation that although the bar was set high, it was an achievable goal that a player of her caliber could reach. She had quite the year and I know with her work ethic and determination, this is only the beginning of a great career for her."
Vallejos appeared in all 59 games for SF State as the Gators reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. She broke the program record in batting average (.442), hits (95), doubles (18) and runs (55), and her 95 hits this season are the fifth-most in a season in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) history as well as tied for the third-most in the country this year. In addition to leading the CCAA in most offensive categories, she also led the conference in stolen bases with 32, which is the second-most recorded in a season in SF State history.Â
The CCAA Freshman of the Year and All-CCAA First Team honoree was named to the National Player of the Year watch list as well as a finalist for the National Freshman of the Year, one of just eight freshmen from across the country to earn this distinction. She was also named to the NFCA and D2CCA All-West Region First Teams, and the D2CCAÂ All-America Honorable Mention.Â
The Reno, Nevada native becomes the fifth Gator to earn NFCA All-America recognition and the ninth All-American in history. She is also one of just four freshmen from across the nation to earn All-America status this season and one of 51 total student-athletes from across 38 different institutions.Â
