SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State women's volleyball team bolted to an early one-set lead, but couldn't make it stand up as Cal State L.A. came from behind to capture a hard-fought 3-1 victory on Saturday night at the Main Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Gators had their three-match winning streak snapped, falling to 10-7 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles raised their record to 12-3 on the season and 5-3 in conference play.
“We played very well early in the match,” said SF State head coach Michelle Patton. “We just didn't stay aggressive or make the necessary adjustments against a very good Cal State L.A. team.”
The Gators were unable to slow the Eagles' attack as the visitors owned a .261-.168 advantage in hitting percentage, posting 53 kills compared to 41 for SF State. CSULA also displayed its prowess at the net with nine team blocks.
Freshman Brittany Powell (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the Gators with nine kills on the evening to go along with one block solo and one block assist. Fellow classmate Kyle Lamet (Benicia, Calif.) also stood out, hitting .273 for the match on eight kills with just two errors. Meanwhile, setters Anne Heggli (Cool, Calif.) and Mary Maiocco (Bakersfield, Calif.) handed out 19 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Gators return to action next weekend when they hit the road for a pair of matches at Chico State (Oct. 10) and Cal State Stanislaus (Oct.11).
