No. 21 Seawolves Spoil Gators' Senior Day In Doubleheader Sweep

SF State Recognized Its Four Seniors Before the 1st Pitch of this Afternoon's Doubleheader with Sonoma State
SAN FRANCISCO--- The 21st ranked Sonoma State Seawolves spoiled the SF State softball team's Senior Day by sweeping a doubleheader from the Gators this afternoon at the SFSU Softball Field. The Seawolves won game one 2-0 and rallied to win the night cap 8-3 in eight innings. Prior to the start of game one, the Gators recognized both teams' seniors including their own in Jessica Delgado (Monterey, California, Cal State Monterey Bay), Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley), Carolyn Knudson (Napa, California, Napa Valley Junior College), and Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland).
 
Rochelle Vanyi hit a two-run two-out home run to left field to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. That is all the runs that Julianne Martinez (17-6) needed as she pitched a six-hit complete game shutout while striking out one and walking no one. Martinez's performance spoiled the outing by Vanessa Truan (2-5) who also pitched a complete game, but gave up two runs and five hits while striking out three and walking two.
 
The Gators had a chance in their half of the fifth as Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger) and Rachael Kroneder (Pleasanton, California, Amador Valley)hit back to back one-out singles. They advanced a base on a sacrifice by Heather Jensen (Sacramento, California, Del Campo), but Martinez got the next Gator to line out to right field. 
 
Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty) had two of the Gators' six hits including her fifth double of the season while five different Seawolves had one hit apiece.
 
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the night cap. Carolyn Knudson led off with a double to center field and scored on a two-out double by Karolyn Gubbine to right center. The Seawolves came back and tied it at 1-1 in their half of the third when Danielle D'Eccliss scored as Ashley Britton reached on an error by the Gators. D'Eccliss reached on a single with one out and advanced to second on a walk by Janelle Arnold and went to third on a single by Simone Brandalise.
 
Skylynn Myers' two-out single drove in Kayla Ledford to give Sonoma State (37-12, 23-9 CCAA) a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth after Ledford doubled to right center with two outs.
 
SF State retook the lead with a two-run fifth inning. Heather Jensen opened the inning with a lead-off single. She advanced to second when Gubbine reached on an error by the Seawolves. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy). Jensen scored the tying run when Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) reached on a fielder's choice which Gubbine advanced to third on to tie the game at 2-2. Jessica Delgado (Monterey, California, North Monterey) then singled home Gubbine to give the Gators a 3-2 lead.

Sonoma State once again came back and tied the game in its half of the sixth inning at 3-3 as Vanyi doubled to right center field to lead off the inning and scored when Myers reached on an error by the Gators with two outs.
 
The game remained tied at 3-3 until Sonoma State's eighth when the Seawolves erupted for five runs two on a two-run double by Myers and the last three on a bases clearing double by Brandalise to give Sonoma State a 8-3 lead.
 
Samantha Lipperd shut down the Gators (19-26, 12-16 CCAA) in bottom of the eighth to preserve the 8-3 victory for Sonoma State. Lipperd improved to 19-5 as she pitched 8 innings of five-hit ball, striking out six and walking four while giving up three runs (one earned). Four different Seawolves had two hits apiece in Brandalise, Vanyi, Ledford, and Myers.
 
Marisa Ibarra (Hollister, California, San Benito ) (6-9) picked up the loss in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one. Delgado had two of the Gators' five hits, who will return to the diamond tomorrow morning at 10am for a conference doubleheader with Humboldt State in McKinleyville, California, at McKinleyville High School.
