Softball Team Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Karolyn Gubbine Led the Gators With Her .329 Batting Average, 56 Hits, and 10 Stolen Bases
DALY CITY, Calif.--- The SF State softball team held its annual Awards Banquet this past Thursday at the Boulevard Café in Daly City. The Gators presented five awards in Best Offensive Player, Best Defensive Player, Gator Award, Most Inspirational, and Most Improved. 
 
Senior catcher Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) was named this year's Team Best Offensive Player. Gubbine finished the season batting a team high .329 with three home runs while driving in 15 runs. She tied for the team lead with 9 doubles, 23 runs scored, and 56 hits while stealing a team high 10 bases. 
 
Junior third baseman Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger)was named the Team's Defensive Player of the Year. She started in 49 of the Gators' 51 games and had a .955 fielding percentage at the hot corner. Cardenas had 55 putouts and 155 assists at third base for the Gators. She also hit a team high 6 home runs and led the team with her 23 runs driven in while adding four doubles. 
 
Junior utility player Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) was selected as the Gator Award recipient. She finished second on the team with her .317 batting average while tying for the team lead with her 9 doubles and finished second with her 22 runs driven in and was named to the Second Team All-CCAA squad last week. Wood also had three home runs and scored 17 runs this season in the 41 games she played in for the Gators. She also recorded four saves with 23 strikeouts in 39.2 innings on the mound for SF State.
 
Kelly McDonald (Gilroy, California, Live Oak) was named the Team's Most Inspirational Player with 22 hits of which four were doubles. She also started in 34 of the 46 games she played in while scoring 12 runs. McDonald had 74 putouts and 16 assists playing both second base and outfielder for the Gators this past season. Deana Querubin (San Jose, California, Milpitas ) was named this year's Team Most Improved Player. Querubin played in 12 games this season in a back-up utility role for the Gators.

SF State finished the season with a 20-33 overall record and a 13-23 record in the CCAA.
