SAN FRANCISCO -
Megan Johnson hit .571 with a match-high 12 kills to lead the San Francisco State women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) over visiting Cal State Stanislaus in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest on Saturday at The Swamp.
The Gators also received double-digit kill totals from
Meagan Wright (11) and
Kelly Ostello (10) to help raise their record to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in league action, while the Warriors drop to 7-16 and 4-11 in the CCAA.
Other notable contributions for SF State included
Iris Tolenada's performance of 40 assists, nine digs and three service aces, while
Jessica Nicerio topped all players with 20 digs of her own.
On the flip side, Andrea Fett totaled 11 kills for Stanislaus, while Melissa Bishop finished with seven put-aways and four blocks in the defeat.
As a team, the Gators served up 11 aces on the night, their second-best total of the season, and maintained a 45-31 advantage in kills and a 53-48 edge in digs en route to their eighth sweep of the year.
Clinging to a precarious 11-10 lead in set number one, SF State received back-to-back put-aways from Ostello, while Wright dealt a pair of aces, igniting a 9-2 blitz that put the host school comfortably in front, 20-12. Stanislaus narrowed the gap to four moments later; however, the Purple and Gold pulled away down the stretch as two kills by Johnson and
Jaclyn Clark served as bookends to a 4-1 closing spurt.
That momentum carried over into the second frame as Wright launched three non-returnables, while Tolenada planted two aces to help the Gators forge an early 11-3 advantage it would not relinquish. The flow of the match turned ragged at this juncture as SF State survived five attack errors and three errant serves thanks in part to Johnson, who supplied four kills to keep the visitors at bay for the remainder of the set.
The Gators were looking for a quick knockout in the third set, building a 13-7 bulge following another Wright put-away before the Warriors rallied. Fett quickly knocked down two kills and registered a solo block to fuel a 10-3 spurt that gave Stanislaus its first lead of the night at 17-16. Shortly thereafter, Eva Chafeh added an ace to put the visitors up 22-20. However, SF State abruptly seized control as Clark hammered home a pair of shots to tie the score at 22-22. Stung, the Warriors committed two attack errors on the ensuing serves, while Wright's final attempt of the night fittingly found the floor to seal the win.
SF State returns to the court on Wednesday for a Halloween night showdown at Sonoma State beginning at 7 p.m. The Seawolves (17-6, 11-4 CCAA) remain tied with the Gators for third place in the conference race after rallying for a 3-2 win over Chico State on Saturday.
