SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team received a match-high 14 kills from
Meagan Wright and another 10 from
Kelly Ostello, but it wasn't enough as visiting Cal State L.A. owned an 11.5-0 advantage in total blocks to key its 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) on Saturday, spoiling the Gators' Senior Night festivities at The Swamp.
The Golden Eagles posted a .311 attack percentage, committing just seven errors for the entire match to raise their record to 11-13 on the season and 9-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while SF State hit just .160 in its 2012 home finale, slipping to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in league play.
Additionally,
Megan Johnson (.545) and
Jazmine Williams (.462) contributed seven kills apiece for the Purple and Gold, while
Sammie Battles came off the bench to post a career-best 13 digs.
However, CSULA was tough to contain on this night as four of its six starters finished with a hitting percentage over .300, including Samantha Potter, who equaled that figure with a team-best 11 kills followed by Sukhjit Athwal (.368), who launched nine put-aways, while Marquis Mora (.333) recorded six of her own to go along with four aces and eight block assists. Loreal Carter tallied eight block assists as well, while Athwal and Reanna Hill notched three apiece.
The opening set was a see-saw affair featuring nine ties and four lead changes in the early going as Wright kill provided the Gators a slim 9-8 advantage. Shortly thereafter, Mora served up three aces, while Athwal collected two put-aways to highlight a 12-5 run that vaulted the Eagles in front at 20-14. SF State countered with a 9-3 spurt of its own to tie the score at 23-23, but the rally was quickly snuffed out as Kymberly Silveyra came off the bench to power down a kill, while Carter and Hill combined on a block for the clinching point.
Stung, SF State was unable to solve CSULA's domination at the net in the second stanza as the visitors recorded six blocks. Wright registered four of the Gators' nine put-aways in the frame, but the host were limited to a combined (-.026) hitting percentage. Still, the Purple and Gold found itself in a 13-13 tie, until the Eagles uncorked an 8-2 run to build a 21-15 bulge. An errant serve and a Johnson non-returnable gave the home crowd a glimmer of hope, but Potter promptly took matters into her own hands, blasting four straight kills to close out the set.
The Gators came out of intermission looking for a spark to ignite a furious comeback, with Williams recording three kills and Ostello adding another pair in the early moments of set number three. However, SF State was unable to widen its 9-2 lead as CSULA began a gradual climb back into contention. The visitors finally caught up at 19-19 following a block by Mora and Athwal. The Purple and Gold briefly went back in front on another Ostello put-away, but a bad set followed by two attack errors quickly spelled doom. Mora then knocked down a kill and soon added an ace as the Eagles handed SF State just its second 3-0 defeat of the season.
Prior to Saturday's match, the Gators held a special Senior Night ceremony, celebrating the accomplishments of their own
Sammie Battles,
Kelsie Brennan,
Megan Johnson and
Iris Tolenada.
SF State will look to rebound next weekend when it travels south to battle league contenders UC San Diego (Nov. 9) and Cal State San Bernardino (Nov. 10) on consecutive nights. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
