McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – The visiting San Francisco State softball team jumped back into conference play on Friday, but experienced a double dose of defeat as Humboldt State captured both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association twin-bill by scores of 5-3 and 11-3 at McKinleyville High School.
With the sweep, the Gators fall to 12-26 on the season and 5-19 in league play, while the Lumberjacks move to 14-29 overall and 6-22 in the CCAA.
After HSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, SF State plated three runs in the second as
Lucy Fernandez homered for the second time this season to lead off the frame; pinch-runner
Jenna Robertson touched home moments later when
Cara Spence reached on error, while
Courtney Gravel scored on
Heather Jensen's squeeze bunt.
Trailing 3-1, the Jacks rallied via the long ball as Alicia Reid's solo shot in the bottom of the second narrowed the gap, while Kirsten Nouzovsky's three-run blast in the fourth put the host school in front to stay, 5-3.
The Gators threatened in the top of the sixth on back-to-back singles by
Jenna Wermes and Gravel. However, after pinch-hitter
Torrey Rook reached on a fielder's choice followed by an HSU wild pitch, Jacks starter Jennifer Sizemore wiggled free of trouble by inducing a double play grounder to end the inning.
Sizemore (4-5) went the distance, scattering nine hits and three walks to pick up the victory, while her SF State counterpart
Marisa Ibarra (6-8) was saddled with the defeat despite fanning seven batters in seven innings.
Wermes and Nouzovsky paced their respective teams with three hits each, while Gravel and Reid finished with two apiece.
In the nightcap, HSU broke open a tight ballgame with seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for the run-rule victory.
The Jacks flashed their power from the get-go as Chrissy Stalf's RBI double and Dani Randall's three-run blast over the fence in left-center field provided the hosts a 4-0 cushion in the bottom of the first.
After SF State dented the scoreboard in the top of the second on Jensen's run-scoring single, Spence belted her first collegiate homer in the fourth, while
Ashley Huff added an RBI single, pulling the visitors to within 4-3.
However, HSU erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame as a costly Gator throwing error enabled three runners to score after the Jacks loaded the bases. Shortly thereafter, Randall (5 RBI) smacked her second homer of the contest, knocking in Courtney Hiatt to give the hosts a 9-3 advantage.
HSU promptly ended the game in the next frame on Nouzovsky's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Stalf to account for the final margin.
Alyssa Castillo (3-6) earned the victory after allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks, while
Becky Nakano (4-5) absorbed the loss.
Spence, Huff and Jensen finished with two hits apiece to pace the SF State offense, while Reid contributed three of the Jacks' 13 hits.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday with another doubleheader at McKinleyville High, starting at 10 a.m.
