Grapplers find triumph at UNK Duals

Isaiah Jimenez went 4-0 at the UNK Duals, picking up two pins and two decision wins.
KEARNEY, Neb. -- Heading into this week's matchups at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, the San Francisco State wrestling team knew it would face nationally-ranked opponents in tough competition. The Gators came out of the four duals with an impressive 3-1 record to jump to 6-5 on the season in duals. SF State beat Colorado State-Pueblo 24-18, followed by a close 21-19 upset win over No. 17-ranked Adams State and a 29-15 victory over Newman. No. 10-ranked Colorado Mesa broke the Gators' win streak, however, with a tight 21-18 result over SFSU.

Isaiah Jimenez, who ranks seventh in the nation at 165, led the way for the Gators by posting a 4-0 record on the day, including two pins and two wins by decision. Fellow ranked teammate Naveed Bagheri, third in the nation at 141, posted a 3-1 record with his first pin of the season, a technical fall and a win by forfeit. Also picking up a pin on the day was Conrad Snell (1-2), making it his fifth pin this year. Isaiah Hurtado also remained undefeated on the day with a 3-0 record.

The Gators opened the full day against Colorado State-Pueblo and started the dual trailing 3-0 after the top-ranked 125 wrestler Jesse Hillhouse won by decision over Jairo Rodriguez.  Hurtado gave SFSU its first points of the day with a 13-2 major decision win over Jacob Haney at 133, followed by Bagheri's 15-0 technical fall over Adam Ortiz at 141--making it the third match in a row Bagheri didn't surrender a point to his opponent.

Up 9-3, Snell pinned Jimmy Chase at 149 in just over a minute and a half (1:36) to give the Gators six more points in their column. Continuing the winning streak for SF State, Vicente Aboytes beat Nick Stahler 4-0 at 157, followed by Jimenez's first pin of the day at 2:05 over Trevor Grant in the 165 wieght class.

CSU-P's Ray Hall broke the Gators' streak with a close 8-7 decision victory over Alexander Simon at 174 to put the score at 24-6 in favor of SF State. Adam Carey pinned SFSU's Calvin Nicholls at 4:29 in the 184 class to bring Colorado State-Pueblo's tally up to 12 points, half of the Gators'. Although the Tunderwolves were able to take the last two matches at 197 and 285, SF State held onto the 24-18 win to start the day 1-0.

In the second dual, the Gators fell behind in a similar fashion with Adams State taking the first 125 match with a major decision to go up 4-0. Hurtado grabbed his second win by decision at 133 over Martin Ramierez to cut the Grizzlies' lead to just one point at 4-3.

In a nationally-ranked showdown, no. 7-ranked Ryan Fillingame defeated #3 Bagheri, breaking his four-match shutout streak. Filligame took the match 7-3 to put his team up with a similar 7-3 lead. The Grizzlies took the next two matches at the 149 and 157 weight classes to lead 16-3, before Jimenez grabbed his second win on the day with a 4-2 decision over Justin Samora.

Adams State's Jarrod Purvis defeated Simon 8-1 to put the Gators in a 19-6 hole, but the remaining grapplers for SF State were determined to get their team back in the competition. Nicholls pinned Mario Garcia at 6:51 to jump SFSU's score to 12 points, seven points behind the Grizzlies.

Down 19-12, Thomas Martin won by forfeit at 197 to bring the score within one point and Richard Segovia grabbed a 4-2 decision over Taylor Stam to seal the victory for the Gators at 21-19.

Building off the momentum it gained in the first two duals, SF State took an early 20-0 lead over Newman. Rodriguez defeated Kris Workman 5-2 at 125, followed by Alexander Williams win by forfeit at 133. After losing the previous round, Bagheri pinned Travis Rodenbaugh at 2:07 to put the Gators up 15-0.Dyaln Phillipy's technical fall (18-0 at 4:22) pushed SFSU further ahead to 20-0.

Colton Duhr finally put the Jets on the boardwith a 7-3 decision victory at 157, but Jimenez grabbed his second pin of the day with 4:20 on the clock at 165. Despite the 26-3 lead, Newman found 12 more points in the next three matches before losing the final heavy weight matchup with Segovia defeating Trey Grovener 3-1 to lift SF State 29-15 over NU.

With momentum continuing to build in favor of the Gators, SF State took on #10 Colorado Mesa to conclude the dual tournament. Like it had in the first two duals, SFSU fell behind in the first match but responded in the 133 with Hurtado's 5-3 decision over Tyler Nelson.

Tied at 3-3, Bagheri won by forfeit to put the Gators up 9-3, but the Mavericks answered right back with three points in a decision victory at 149. Aboytes grabbed a huge upset victory over No. 2-ranked Jon Gappmaier, winning 7-2 at 157, and Jimenez took a 4-3 decision over Chester Granard to put SFSU up 15-6.

CMU responded by taking the next three matches to commandeer the lead at 21-15, just needing to hold off a pin in the final matchup of the dual. Segovia couldn't pin down Paco Retana and despite his 9-7 decision victory, the Gators fell 21-18.

SF State returns home to host a pair of duals at the Swamp on Jan. 27. The Gators will first take on Simpson University at 1 p.m. before Grand Canyon hits the mat with the Gators at 5 p.m.
