SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators' volleyball team bounced back from last night's 3-0 setback to the Chico State Wildcats with a 3-1 (25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17) win over the visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors this evening at the Swamp. The Gators had four players record double figures in kills to key their four-set win over the Warriors.
"I am pleased on how we started the match this evening," said SF State head coach Jill Muhe. "We played team oriented volleyball."
The Gators came out on fire in the first set as they posted a .538 hitting percentage and took the set 25-10.
SF State scored nine of the first ten points to take a 9-1 lead. The Gators increased their lead to 15-5 on one of Melissa Horton's 10 kills. The Warriors cut the deficit to 19-10 on a kill by Jocelyn Cervantes, but the hosts closed out the set with the final 5 points including two service aces by Jaclyn Clark and kills by Horton and Meagan Wright.
The second set went back and forth early with the last tie at 6-6. SF State then scored 7 of the next 11 points to take a 13-9 lead on a service ace by Horton.
Cal State Stanislaus came back and cut the deficit to 15-14 on a service ace by Tiffany Isel. SF State rallied back and increased its lead back to 22-17 and closed out the set scoring three of the final 5 points with two kills by Jazmine Williams.
The Warriors (4-11, 1-6 CCAA) came out of the intermission taking a 10-7 lead. Then they increased that lead to 21-12 taking advantage of hitting errors by SF State.
The Gators rallied back and cut the deficit to 24-23 on a Wright kill, but the Warriors took the set 25-23 as they scored the final point on an error by the hosts.
In the fifth set, the Gators came out strong like they did in the first taking a 7-2 lead capped by a Kelly Ostello service ace. They increased that lead to 15-9 on a Williams' kill.
The visitors cut the Gator lead to 21-16, but the hosts scored four of the next five points to take the set 25-17 capped by a Wright kill.
SF State improves to 8-6 overall and 3-3 with its first home win of the season.
Besides their 53 total kills, SF State also had 11 service aces and 6 total team blocks.
"We have a three-match week coming up which is always tough," added Muhe. "We have three tough opponents, but we hope take the lessons we learned from this weekend and build on them going into this coming week."
SF State will face #13 Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif., this Wednesday, October 9 at 7pm. The Gators will then return this coming weekend. They will host Humboldt State on Friday, October 11 and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, October 12. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7pm at The Swamp.
