Gators' Phillipy Places 5th at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS--- SF State's Dylan Phillipy went 6-2 at the 32nd Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to place fifth at the prestigious tournament.  Phillipy became the first Gator wrestler to place at this tournament since Donald Lockett placed fifth in 2004.
 
The Martinez native started the two-day tournament with a loss by fall (1:05) to Virginia Tech's Devin Carter.  Carter was the second seeded wrestler in the 141 bracket and was third in the nation in Division I.  Phillipy came back with a 15-0 technical fall win at 5:26 over Brown University's Zachary Tanenbaum. 
 
The senior wrestler won his next three matches by fall.  His first one was at 4:32 over Cal Baptist's Bradford Gerl.  His won over North Carolina State's Sam Speno came at 2:21.  Then he defeated Todd Preston of Harvard at 2:01 to record his sixth win this season by fall.
 
In the consolation quarterfinal, Phillipy defeated Joey Lazor of Northern Iowa by a 12-5 decision. Lazor was seeded third in the tournament and is currently eighth in the nation. 
Phillipy's five-match winning streak was snapped in the consolation semi-finals as he lost by a 17-2 technical fall decision to University of Oklahoma's Nick Lester. Going into this weekend, Lester was 16th in the nation and was seeded fifth in the tournament.
 
Phillipy then wrestled Carter again for fifth place, which the Gator grappler won by injury default to improve to 12-5 on the season.
 
SF State junior wrestler Andrew Reggi (11-5) recorded two wins in the 197 weight class bracket.  He started off with a 11-1 loss by major decision to Shane Woods of the University of Wyoming.  Woods was seeded eighth in the tournament.  Reggi came back with a 9-0 major decision win over Grand Canyon's Marcus Haughian.  He then won his next match by injury default over Harvard's James Fox.  Reggi finished his day at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 3-2 loss to Boise State's Cody Dixon.
 
Heading into this afternoon's championship matches, the Gators are tied for 19th with 26 points with Brown University out of 33 teams.  SF State was the top Division II team at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational as Cal Baptist finished 31st with five points and Colorado State-Pueblo was 32nd with four points.
