Seawolves take two from Gators

Courtney Gravel makes a play at second to take out a Seawolf runner.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK --- In the second day of the four-game series against Sonoma State, SF State could only put two runs up to get swept by the host Seawolves. The Gators dropped the first game 6-2 and the nightcap 5-0 to fall to 5-4 overall, 1-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. SSU improves to 8-3 on the season, 3-1 in conference action.

Courtney Gravel and Brittany Barcellos were the only two Gators to grab hits in both games, with Gravel going 4-for-7 on the day with an RBI and adding a run herself. Barcellos went 2-for-3 in the first game and 1-for-2 in the nightcap for SF State.

The Gators left a total of 12 runners stranded on bases in the first contest, but were limited to only three potential runs in the nightcap.

SF State opened the first inning of the day with Ashley Huff grabbing a free walk to first. Lucy Fernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Huff to second, while surrendering the first out. Gravel stepped up to the plate and powered a shot straight up the middle for an RBI single, scoring Huff from second to give the Gators an early 1-0 lead.

Marisa Ibarra struck out her first two batters of the day and Fernandez collected a ground ball to find the third putout as the Gators took the Seawolves down in order in the bottom of the first.

Back at the plate, Cara Spence opened the inning with a walk in her first chance at bat. Two outs later, Barcellos knocked a pitch back at Samantha Lipperd, but Lipperd couldn't control it, allowing Barcellos to keep the single and put Spence on second. In her second chance at bat, Huff took another walk to first to load up the bases, but the Gators couldn't send any more runners in as the Seawolves ended the inning on the next play.

After Ali Palermo tied the game up in the bottom of the second with a home run to left center, the Gators answered right back in the next half inning. Gravel started with a leadoff single and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Kylie Grabowski. Jennifer Lewis joined Gravel on base with a hard-hit single to second base, beating Hayley Condon's throw to first.

With two outs and runners at first and second, Sarah Catania singled deep to left field, allowing Gravel to round third and once again put the Gators in the lead at 2-1. Kelsey Murakami loaded the bases with another free walk from Lipperd, but despite the runners on base, SF State couldn't capitalize to head into the bottom of the third with a one-run lead.

Once again SSU tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning, scoring one run off two hits. Both teams had chances to take over the lead, but netiher could send runners home until the Seawolves grabbed the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth. Sonoma State took advantage of a Gator error, scoring one run off just one hit to put itself in front 3-2.

The Seawolves added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Palermo blasted another homer, this time to left center, with two runners on base. Ibarra struck out the next batter and Gravel made the third put-out to end the inning, giving the Gators one more chance at the plate.

Feeling the pressure, SF State came up empty with a hit in the top of the seventh to end the game 6-2 in favor of the Seawolves.

Hoping to settle for another split and take the nightcap, the Gators just could not produce at the plate in the second game and only registered three hits in their seven chances at bat.

After holding SSU scoreless in the first two innings, Palermo hit her third home run of the day--this time over the right field fence--with two outs to score the first run in the nightcap. The Seawolves managed to add another point to their tally before the Gators could find their third out.

Sonoma State put three more runs on the scoreboard, two in the fourth and one in the sixth, while locking down the Gators at the plate. With the pressure of needing to score five runs in the top of the seventh, Gravel started the inning with a single to the right side, beating the throw at first. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third as the Seawolves found their first out of the inning. SSU held onto the shutout, however, taking out SF State's next to batters to take three of four games in the series.

SF State continues CCAA play back out on the road as the Gators head to Chico State for a four-game series. Both Friday and Saturday's doubleheaders will begin at 12 p.m. in Chico, a team the Gators beat 8-0 in six innings in the opening weekend.
