STANFORD --- While the SF State wrestling team may have lost to National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. I Stanford Saturday afternoon, the Gators aren't letting it derail their sights on the Super Regional 4 meet coming up. SF State dropped a 22-11 dual to the Cardinal, but will have two weeks to learn from the meet as the regular season is behind the Gators and the pursuit for nationals is ahead.
Isaiah Hurtado and
Naveed Bagheri were the only two Gator grapplers to post victories in their respective weight classes. Hurtado picked up six team points for SF State off a forfeit win at 133 while Bagheri added the five additional points with a techincal fall at 141.
The Gators, now sitting at an even 8-8 dual record, started the dual in a 6-0 hole after dropping the heavyweight bout due to forfeit. At 125,
Marc Collier managed to escape Evan Silver's grasp twice, but couldn't overpower Silver and lost 15-2 to give Stanford a 10-0 team lead.
With only one 133 wrestler capable of wrestling, Hurtado picked up his 18th win of the season off a forfeit victory, putting SF State on the board at 10-6. The Cardinal took the next bout at 149 to increase their lead to 13-11, with the 141 grapplers taking the mat next.
The No. 4-ranked 141 wrestler in Div. II, Bagheri, faced Josh Lauderdale and took control of the match from the start. Bagheri tallied four takedowns, three three-point near falls, a penalty point and a riding time point--while giving Lauderdale one escape--to pick up his seventh tech fall victory this season at 19-1. The major decision gave the Gators five points on the scoreboard, putting SF State ahead for the first time.
Despite the 11-10 lead, Stanford powered through the remaining matches, grabbing wins in each class. At 149,
Conrad Snell battled to a close 3-1 defeat to Timmy Boone, but came up empty handed as the seven minutes expired.
Isaiah Jimenez picked up a reversal against Kyle Meyer at 165, but also came shy of grabbing a victory. The Cardinal swept through the last six matches to clinch the 22-11 team win.
SF State has two weeks to sort out any kinks before heading to Chadron, Neb., for the NCAA Super Regional 4 meet Feb. 22-23.
