Box Score 2 TURLOCK --- Despite grabbing a 5-2 lead, SF State surrendered four late runs to drop the first game of Friday's doubleheader at Cal State Stanislaus. The Gators went on to win the nightcap 4-1 to settle for a split in the first half of the California Collegiate Athletic Association series. The results put SF State at 7-8 overall, 3-7 in conference, while the Warriors sit 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the CCAA.
Cara Spence posted hits in both games, finishing the day with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate with three runs and two RBIs.
Kelsey Murakami grabbed two hits and an RBI in the first game to be the only other Gator to register more than one hit.
SF State opened the first inning of competition with a chance to grab the first run, but left two runners on base to head on defense empty handed. The Warriors took the opportunity to take a 1-0 lead in their first chance at the plate, scoring the run on one hit.
Neither teams could produce on offense for the next innings until the Gators stepped up to the plate in the top of the fourth.
Jennifer Lewis (1-for-2) started the inning with a leadoff double to left field and was joined on base by
Kylie Grabowski, who grabbed a free walk to first.
Lucy Fernandez reached on after a fielder's choice took out
Chelsea Brent running for Grabowski. With one out, Spence doubled to left, scoring Lewis from third and advancing Fernandez to take third.
Sarah Catania blasted a similar double to left field, scoring both Spence and Fernandez to put the Gators up 3-0. Another double to left, this time from Murakami, gave SF State a 4-1 lead before the Warriors ended the inning with a double play.
The Warriors responded in the bottom half of the inning, but could only cut the Gators lead to 4-2 off one run.
Looking to hold onto the lead,
Gabby Reta opened the inning with a single down the right field line. Lewis took advantage of a fielding error from CSUS's centerfielder to reach first and push Reta to scoring position at third. The Warriors grabbed two outs to put pressure on the Gator offense, but Spence walked to load the bases. However, the three runners were left stranded on the bases as the Warriors found the third putout to get out of the jam.
In the top of the seventh, SF State added an insurance run off one hit. With bases loaded and two outs,
Ashley Huff took a free pass to first pass, advancing each of the runners to score Spence from third. Despite the three runners on base, the Gators couldn't squeeze any more runs out of the inning, heading on defense with a 5-2 lead.
Needing three runs to keep the game going, Cal State Stanislaus put two runners on base before the Gators could pick up two outs. Although SF State had the two-out advantage, the Warriors put together a successful two-out rally to score four runs to take the game 6-5, nullifying SF State's insurance runs.
Hoping to shake off the defeat, SF State put itself on the board first in the nightcap to take an early 1-0 lead. Huff opened the top of the first with a walk and proceeded to steal second, followed by a wild pitch to put Huff at third. With two outs, CSUS walked three consecutive batters to allow Huff to cross home plate and put the Gators up 1-0 before the Warriors could find the third out.
The Warriors found the tying run in the bottom of the second, once again stringing together a two-out rally. With bases loaded, Brittni Weatherford singled to send in the tying run.
SF State responded in its next chance at the plate, scoring three runs on just one hit. With two outs, Spence singled to reach first and quickly found her teammates joining her on base. Two different Warrior pitchers walked five consecutive batters to hand the Gators three runs before CSUS managed to get out number three. Due to the poor pitching, the Gators grabbed a 4-1 advantage and held onto the lead through the rest of the nightcap for the victory.
Day two of the CCAA four-game series continues Saturday with another pair of games beginning at noon in Turlock.
