Box Score 2 LA JOLLA—SF State came from behind to tie game one and force the game into extra innings, but couldn't see it to victory as UC San Diego scored two late runs in the bottom of the ninth to take game one. The Tritons (21-13, 17-7 CCAA)went on to also claim the nightcap 9-4, despite a valiant effort from the Gators (13-20, 7-17 CCAA) in the top of the fourth, taking the California Collegiate Athletic Association four game series.
Ashley Huff,
Cara Spence and
Sarah Catania each grabbed hits in both games with Huff showing 3-for-5 in the opener.
Marisa Andrade and Spence each blasted their first home runs of the season—the first collegiate homer for Andrade.
In the opening game, the Tritons grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third off three hits and a Gator error, but SF State responded in its next turn at the plate. The Gators played one run off two hits to cut the lead 2-1.
With one out,
Kylie Grabowski took a free trip to first and
Courtney Gravel took over running the bases for her.
Jennifer Lewis stepped up to the plate and knocked a single to left to push Gravel to second. Spence grabbed her first base hit of the day with an RBI single down the left side, giving Gravel the green light to put the Gators on the board.
Neither team could add more runs, despite putting runners on base, until the seventh when the Gators took what could be their last chance at bat. Andrade pinch hit and blasted her first collegiate long ball straight to center to tie the game and give SF State a chance to out a come-from-behind rally.
The Tritons couldn't put any more runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, SF State took its first lead of the game taking advantage of a crucial Triton mistake. Catania led the inning with a single to center and
Brittany Barcellos' sacrifice bunt advanced her to second. Huff added a base hit to left and as Catania headed to third, she got caught in a pickle but managed to escape the run down and reach third safely.
With runners on second and third,
Gabby Reta laid down a well-executed suicide squeeze bunt, getting out in the process, but scoring Catania for the go-ahead run.
Needing to score one run to extend the game once, the Tritons scored two runs to take the heartbreaker from the Gators 4-3.
Hoping to build off the nine hits SF State found in the opener, the Gators struggled to string hits together in the first couple innings, finding themselves trailing 3-0 after two complete innings.
The Gators broke free in the top of the third when Catania opened the inning with another single. Barcellos laid down another bunt to move Catania up a base and Huff joined her on base once more with a single. With Catania on third, Huff stole second to put runners in scoring position. The Tritons tried to grab a putout, but allowed Catania to score to cut the lead to 3-1.
UCSD added a big inning at the plate in the next half inning, scoring three runs off a lead-off homer and two other hits.
While trailing 6-1, the Gators didn't give up hope and answered right back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. With Grabowski on first after a walk, Spence knocked her long ball over the left field fence to score two.
Kelsey Murakami scored the third off an RBI double from Catania to put the Gators back in the game at 6-4.
The Tritons powered down, however, adding three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth to take the nightcap 9-4 and the CCAA series.
SF State is back on the road next week, heading to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions. The Gators, who won the first tournament in Turlock, will look to get back to their winning ways.
