SAN FRANCISCO –The SF State Gators' softball team came back and won the nightcap of this afternoon's doubleheader 6-2 to split with the Coyotes. With the split, SF State took the weekend series from Cal State San Bernardino three games to one. The Gators won the second game today behind the pitching of
Ali Garcia. SF State lost the first game to the Coyotes 2-1.
SF State took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap as
Ashley Huff scored when
Courtney Gravel reached on an error by the Coyotes in the bottom of the first inning. Huff led off the inning reaching base on a hits batsman and went to second on her 13
th stolen base. She went to third on a wild pitch and scored on the Coyote error.
The Gators added two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Lucy Fernandez had a one-out double and scored on a two-out single by
Kelsey Murakami.
Jennifer Lewis then hit the fifth pitch she saw for a run scoring double that drove in Murakami with the Gators' third run of the game.
Cal State San Bernardino (18-32, 12-20 CCAA) cut the Gator lead to 3-2 with a two-run fifth inning. Darian Manuz hit a two-out single and went to second as Charlotte Galzote reached on a fielder's choice. Alyssa Flores then hit a two-run triple down the right field line to drive in both Coyote runners and cut the SF State lead to 3-2.
SF State (20-28, 12-20 CCAA) added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase its lead to 6-2.
Sarah Catania and Huff opened up the inning with back-to-back singles. Reta reached on a fielder's choice. With one out, Gravel singled to load the bases.
Kylie Grabowski walked to bring in Huff with the first run of the inning.
Cara Spence reached base with two outs as the Coyotes misplayed her grounder which both Reta and Gravel scored on to give SF State a 6-2 lead.
Garcia (3-0) shut down the Coyotes in the seventh as the Gators took the night cap 6-2. The senior pitcher pitched the complete game victory, giving up 8 hits and two runs, striking out one and walking two.
Huff and Murakami each had two hits apiece while Huff also scored twice.
Taylor Davis (6-5) recorded the loss in the start for Cal State San Bernardino. Manuz and Jamie Leffwingwell each had two hits apiece for the Coyotes.
Game one this afternoon was a pitching duel between SF State's
Marisa Ibarra and the Coyotes' Kacey Cota. The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Manuz reached on an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice by Galzote. She advanced to third on a ground out. Monica Ferguson then hit the first pitch she saw over the right field fence for a two-run home run.
Cota held the Gators without a hit until the fifth inning when Fernandez broke up the no-hitter.
SF State got on the board in its half of the sixth inning. Lewis had a lead-off single and went to second on walk to Catania. Huff reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with one out.
Gabby Reta reached on a fielding error by Cal State San Bernardino to load the bases with one out. Catania scored the Gators' first run on a sacrifice fly by Gravel to cut the deficit in half. Cota induced the next SF State batter to fly out to end the inning.
The Gators had another chance to tie the game in their half of the seventh. Spence had a one-out single. She went to second as Murakami reached on an error. Cota induced the next batter to fly out and she struck out the last one as she pitched the complete game victory.
Cota (4-5) gave up three hits and one unearned run, struck out two and walked one. Manuz and Galzote had two of Cal State San Bernardindo's 6 hits.
Ibarra (14-11) suffered the loss, pitching 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and two runs and striking out two.
SF State will return home to the diamond for the final time of the regular season next weekend as the Gators host Cal State East Bay in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 26 at 1pm. The next day, the two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon. Prior to the game, SF State will recognize both teams' seniors including the Gators' own in
