Box Score LOS ANGELES— The visiting SF State Gators battled back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (7-4, 2-1 CCAA) this evening in five sets (26-24, 16-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12) to win their first conference match of the season.
“Getting a win on the road in the CCAA is very difficult, so we are excited to this win this evening,” said SF State head coach
Jill Muhe. “Tonight's win was a complete team effort.”
Three Gators recorded double-doubles led by
Jaclyn Clark's 17 kills and 16 dig performance. The 17 kills were a season high for the sophomore outside hitter. Junior setter Jacquie Brie also had a double-double with 56 assists and a season high 17 digs. The third SF State player with double digits in kills and digs was
Melissa Horton with 12 kills and 14 digs.
2012 CCAA Freshman of the Year,
Meagan Wright, added 17 kills and
Kaileen Mejia hit for a .471 percentage with 10 kills. Sophomore libero,
Jessica Nicerio, led the visitors with a match high 23 digs and three service aces.
Cal State L.A. (7-4, 2-1 CCAA) took a 9-1 lead in the first half, but SF State battled back and eventually tied the match at 23-23 on an error by the Golden Eagles.
On the next serve, Horton gave the visitors the 24-23 lead as she recorded an ace.
Kelly Ostello and Horton ended the set with back-to-back kills to give SF State set, 26-24.
In the next set, the Golden Eagles took a 15-7 lead on a service ace by Jamie Ann Bero. A kill by
Jazmine Williams cut the Gator deficit to 15-10, but that is the closest the visitors could get as they went on to even the match at 1-1 with a set two 25-16 win.
After the 10-minute intermission, the teams played the first 20 points evenly of set three as Mejia's kill tied the set at 10-10.
Three kills by Mejia, Clark and Horton gave the Gators a 13-12 lead, but Cal State L.A. scored the next four points capped by a Bero kill to give the hosts a 16-13 lead. SF State cut the Golden Eagle lead to 24-23 on hitting error by the hosts, but the Gators had a hitting error to give Cal State L.A. the set 25-23 and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Set four went back and forth early with the Gators holding a 14-13 lead on a Wright kill. They increased the lead to 21-15 on attack error by their opponents.
A kill by Mejia preceded a time out by the Gators, gave them a 24-20 lead but Cal State L.A. had a kill by Bethanee Boggs and SF State had a hitting error to cut the visitor lead to 24-22. Wright finished the set with a kill off an assist from Brice to take the set 25-22 and even the match at 2-2.
The first 18 points off the fifth and deciding set were evenly played with the score tied at 9-9.
Cal State L.A. scored the next three points to take a 12-9 lead on a hitting error by the Gators.
SF State called a timeout and came out scoring the next six points to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2 keyed by two kills by Clark.
Iona Lofrano had 26 kills and 13 digs to lead the way for the hosts.
SF State will continue its road trip tomorrow evening at 7pm, when the Gators face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif., at the Torodome. The Toros lost to #16 Sonoma State in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-11) at home earlier this evening.
