POMONA, Calif.---Cal Poly Pomona Broncos out-rebounded the visiting SF State Gators 37-31 including grabbing 16 offensive rebounds to key their 66-56 win this evening at Kellogg Gymnasium in Pomona. With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA.
"They dominated us on the glass this evening," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "We could not handle them on the offensive glass as they got 16 offensive boards." "We need to bounce back on Saturday and get the 'w'."
Jordan Faison paced the Broncos, who are a half-game out of first place in the CCAA behind co-leaders Cal State L.A. and Cal State San Bernardino. DeRonn Scott added 17 points and Barry Bell chipped in 13 points for the victors.
Nefi Perdomo led the way for the Gators with a game high 20 points with
Bennie Rhodes chipping in 12 points off the bench.
Will Overton, Jr. added 10 points for SF State, who falls to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA. With the loss, SF State is now in fifth place in the CCAA (half-game behind Chico State).
The Broncos held the Gators to just 35% shooting from the field including just 26% from beyond the arc. SF State connected on 62.5% of its attempts from the line, going 15-for-24. Perdomo connected on all 8 of his attempts and also was four-for-nine from beyond the arc.
The Broncos shot 50% from the field including 63% in the second half, but were just 14-for-27 from the charity stripe. They also only connected on two of their 16 attempts from three-point territory.
Cal Poly Pomona built a 14-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but the Gators'
Brandon Tatum dunk capped a 7-2 run by the Gators as they cut the Bronco lead to 16-15 at the 5:50 mark.
Chad Haysbert's tip-in gave the Broncos a 18-15 lead on their next possession, but
Bennie Rhodes' lay-up cut the lead back to one (18-17).
DeRonn Scott's jumper capped a 10-1 run by the Broncos to end the half and give the hosts a 28-18 lead heading into half-time.
Jordan Faison's lay-up gave Cal Poly Pomona a 34-23 lead at the 16:03 mark of the second stanza.

Udun Osakue capped an 8-0 run by the Gators as they cut the Bronco lead to 34-31 in the next three minutes.
Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead back to double digits (48-37) on a Scott jumper with 8:35 on the clock.
The Broncos increased their lead to 54-40 on a jumper by Faison, but the Gators would not go away.
SF State chipped away at the Bronco lead and cut it to 62-56 on a three by Perdomo with 22 seconds left in regulation.
It was a little too late as Scott connected on both of his free throw attempts on the Broncos' next possession to give the hosts a 64-56 lead. The Broncos finished the game going 2-for-4 from line as they took the 66-56 conference win.
SF State will return to the court this Saturday, January 11 at 7:30pm PST, as the Gators will travel to Arcata, Calif., for a CCAA game with Humboldt State at Lumberjack Arena. The Lumberjacks defeated Sonoma State 69-67 this evening in Arcata.
