SAN FRANCISCO –The 19
th ranked SF State Gators will host the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners and Simon Fraser Clan this Friday, January 31 on Senior Day. The Gators will face Cal State Bakersfield at 1pm and Simon Fraser at 3pm. SF State will recognize its seven seniors (
Marc Collier,
Isaiah Hurtado,
Zach Jimenez,
Dylan Phillipy,
A.J. Simon,
Conrad Snell and
Alex Williams) prior to the duals on Friday afternoon.
SF State is coming off a 33-8 loss to Stanford, who was 25
th in the nation in Division I, this past Saturday at The Swamp. The Gators picked up wins at 133 as
Isaiah Hurtado won by a 20-4 technical fall and
Dylan Phillipy won by a 7-4 decision at 141. SF State did lose a close match at 184 with
Zach Jimenez falling by a 2-1 decision.
This was the Gators' first loss this season to a nationally ranked team as they are now 6-3 overall including 5-1 against top 25 teams (NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II or NAIA).
With the wins, Hurtado improves to 20-6 while Phillipy is now at 17-9. Other Gators with at least 15 wins this season are
Hildelv Manzur (15-11 at 285),
Zach Jimenez (17-9 at 184) and
Andrew Reggi (19-5 at 197).
Simon Fraser is coming off a 25-24 win over Embry-Riddle this past weekend in Canada and is led by Dillon Hume at 141 and Skylor Davis at 125.
The Roadrunners are 4-6 in dual meets and are led by the duo of Jose Mendoza (21-9 at 133) and Reuben Franklin (197).
The next day, the Gators will host the California Collegiate Open beginning at 9am at The Swamp. At last year's Collegiate, the Gators had three placers including
Isaiah Hurtado who finished in second place. SF State also had four wrestlers go 2-2 including
Marc Collier,
Alex Williams and
Daniel Flores.
SF State is currently 19
th in the nation in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association rankings with the next rankings set to come out this Wednesday, January 29.
After this weekend, the Gators will just have two duals left (Feb. 6 at Menlo and Feb. 14 at Cal Baptist) in gearing up for the 2014 NCAA Division II Super Region IV/Rocky Mountain Athletic Championships, Feb. 28-Mar 1 in Grand Junction, Colo.
