@SFState_TRK Set To Host 2015 CCAA Track And Field Championships

SAN FRANCISCO – The big event is finally here, for three days the SF State track and field team and Cox Stadium will host the 2015 California Collegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Championships.  The three day meet begins on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and runs through Saturday.

The meet begins on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with the multi events, as well as the javelin and hammer throws.  The meet resumes all day Friday starting at 10:00 a.m. and will concluded with the finals on Saturday.

The Gators, lasted hosted this even in 2007, when SF State took fifth.  This year SF State will send 26 athletes competing in 18 events.  They will be going up against 11 other teams and 227 athletes, including some of the best teams in the country, including traditional powers Chico State, Humboldt State, and UC San Diego.

Last year, the Wildcats took both the men's and the women's championship.  Chico State has won 11 straight championships on the men's side and five-straight on the women's.  The Gators placed fifth in the CCAA Championships last year with 76.17 team points, the Gators had two individual champions, Janesha Anthony took first in the 100m and Maya Cabiness took first in the 400m hurdles.

The Gators strength lies in their field events where SF State has a strong core of jumpers and throwers.  Senior Hilary King paves the way, the Gators record setter in the long jump is currently tops in the conference, her mark of 5.83 meters set at the Chico Distance Carnival and Twilight Invitational is currently 27th in the nation.

In the triple jump, the Gators have three athletes currently ranked in the top-10 in the conference.  Senior Malikah Wilson is fifth, her personal-best mark of 11.25 meters is just shy of a provisional mark.  Right behind her is Jordan Guerrero who ranks sixth in the conference in the triple, Angel Hill ranks ninth.

In the throws, Alex Jones has had a breakout season for the Gators.  The sophomore currently ranks third in the CCAA with a mark of 13.16 meters.  Michelle Chung currently sits fourth in the discus with a top-mark of 38.69 meters.  Last year at the CCAA Championships, Chung placed second in the discus to earn All-CCAA honors.  Brittnee Jones ranks fifth in the hammer with a personal-best mark of 44.66.
