KEARNEY, Neb. — The San Francisco State wrestling team went 2-2 on Saturday at the UNK Midwest Duals hosted by University of Nebraska-Kearney, highlighted by upset victories over No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo and No. 23 Lindenwood.
The Gators (4-4) got off to the right foot with a dominant victory over No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo (2-4). The Gators won seven of the bouts and did not suffer anything more than a decision. SF State earned a pair of falls thanks to
Justin Pichedwatana and
Kevin Henry at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. SF State earned also earned major decisions from
Nathan Cervantez at 133 pounds and from heavyweight
Sam Alnassiri. Three decisions helped shore up the victory and the Gators.
In the Gators' second dual of the day, Colorado Mines remained unblemished at 6-0. The Orediggers pulled away in the bout with victories in the 165 through 197 weight classes.
Mason Boutain earned a major decision in the 157 pound bout while Cervantez and Alnassiri both moved to 2-0 on the day with their decisions.
Against Central Oklahoma (10-2), Cervantez picked up another victory with a narrow 3-2 decision over Blake Dauphin and
Austin Solari shut out Rio Zamora 5-0. Both teams were docked a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Gators wrapped up their day versus No. 23 Lindenwood (4-2), which took the first four bouts before Boutain recorded a 5-0 decision over Tim Bogar. Cervantez had his eight-bout win streak snapped after No. 11-ranked Hunter Haralson took the matchup in the sudden-victory period. Still, Cervantez finished his day 3-1 and improves to 14-3 overall.
Justin Pichedwatana's major decision, followed by
Kevin Henry's pin of Patrick Kristen in just 39 seconds pulled the Gators to within 20-13.
Elias Rosales followed with a close 4-3 decision that made it possible for a tie or win headed into the final bout. It appeared to be an uphill climb in the decisive heavyweight matchup, where Sam Alnsassiri faced No. 11 Jacob Borgmeyer, but Alnassiri persevered with a pin at 6:19, which lifted the Gators to a 22-20 upset of the Lions. Alnassiri is now 11-7 on the season.
