OREGON CITY, Ore. — Coming off an upset of No. 9 California Baptist, the San Francisco State wrestling team finished the weekend with a strong showing at the Clackamas Open on Saturday, led by first-place finishes by Brandon Vu and Sam Alnassiri.

As a team, the Gators finished third of the 23 teams competing, behind Pacific and Southern Oregon. Vu (125 lb.) went 4-0 and Alnassiri (285 lb.) went 5-0 in their respective weight classes. Nathan Cervantez (133 lb.) finished in second place, Justin Pichedwatana (174 lb.) finished in third place, and Joshua Villaflor (141 lb.) and Romeo Medina-Ontiveros (165 lb.) both finished in fourth place. In the 184 lb. bracket, Kevin Henry and Elias Rosales would have met in the third-place bout but both wrestlers forfeited the contest.

"Today was a great way to cap a long weekend. We had solid performances all around," said Head Coach Jason Welch. "Like I said after our upset versus CBU, the team is really coming together. The guys have a sense of purpose and are ready to hit that next level."

Vu began his day with a tech fall over Warner Pacific's Louis Palos, then picked up a 10-2 major decision over Eastern Oregno's Mhar Caballa. The redshirt junior needed overtime versus Southwest Oregon's Francisco Barrera but came out on top, 6-4. Vu capped off his run with a 17-8 major decision over Warner Pacific's Josh Johnson to take first place and move to 10-6 on the season.

Alnassiri, coming off of RMAC Wrestler of the Week honors, continued his hot streak. The heavyweight breezed through his first four bouts, where he won by fall in all of them, including a takedown in just 12 seconds in his third bout. Sam Alnassiri took first place with 7-2 decision over Simon Fraser's Ciaran Ball. The redshirt senior is now 17-7 on the season.
