SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team posted a third-place finish at the 41st Annual California Collegiate Open.
The Gators had winners at 157 lb. (
Mason Boutain) and 174 lb. (
Justin Pichedwatana). The Gators also had second-place finishers at 125 lb. (
Brandon Vu) and 174 lb. (
Maleselino Salt). Overall, the Gators posted a 19-14 record for the day.
"All in all, today was a good day. We're still building towards RMAC, regionals, and nationals," said Head Coach
Jason Welch. "
Mason Boutain and
Justin Pichedwatana had big stepping stones with their first-place finishes and we're on the way."
Boutain won his first two bouts by fall, then followed with an overtime win in the semifinals versus California Baptist's Josh Johnson. Boutain edged Cole Drescher 5-4 in the championship bout. At 174 lb., the Gators were guaranteed a win thanks to a matchup between Pichedwatana and Salt and Pichedwatana came away with the major decision. At 125 lb.,
Brandon Vu worked his way to the championship bout with a pin and a pair of tech falls before being pinned by California Baptist's Alex Nunez.
