Gators Fall at No. 3 UC San Diego

Halimah Oswald totaled a career-high five block assists at UCSD on Saturday.

LA JOLLA, Calif. The San Francisco State women's volleyball team ended its four-match road swing on down note Saturday night, dropping a three-set decision to third-ranked UC San Diego (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest  at RIMAC Arena.

The Gators were limited to a .065 hitting percentage on the evening, slipping to 13-4 on the season and 6-3 in the CCAA.  Meanwhile with the victory, the Tritons move to 16-1 overall and 8-1 in league action.

Senior Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif., Woodland Christian HS, Mt. Hood CC) posted a team-high nine kills, while sophomore Halimah Oswald (San Francisco, Calif., Waldorf HS) registered a career-best five block assists.  In addition, freshman Iris Tolenada (Antioch, Calif., Deer Valley HS) surpassed the 700-assist plateau for the season with 25 helpers against the UCSD, giving her 721 for the year.

The Tritons hit a combined .330 as Sylvia Schmidt led all players with a match-high 16 kills, while Elaine Chen handed out 32 assists.

After falling behind by a 6-0 count in the opening set, SF State rattled off four straight points on a kill and two service aces by sophomore Kyle Lamet (Benicia, Calif., Carondelet HS), along with a UCSD attack error, to narrow the gap to 6-4.  The Gators would draw no closer, however, as the Tritons fashioned a 12-2 run to build an insurmountable 18-6 lead.

SF State kept things close in the second frame until UCSD broke open a tight 7-6 ballgame with a 13-4 outburst, giving the host team a sizeable 20-10 advantage it would not relinquish.  The Gators put together a 6-2 spurt of their own, capped by two Perkins kills, to pull within 22-16. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome.

SF State hung tough once again in the early stages of set three, but was unable to gain the upper hand. After a Tolenada kill brought the visitors to within 9-7, UCSD put together a significant 11-3 run to put the match out of reach at 20-10.

The Gators return home for a pair of matches next weekend when they tackle Cal Poly Pomona (Oct. 9) and No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino (Oct. 10) in the Main Gymnasium.  Both contests are slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
