Seven Gators Place In Top 6 at Mike Clock Open

FOREST GROVE, Ore.---SF State senior Dylan Phillipy led a Gator contingent of 15 wrestlers at this year's Mike Clock Open at the Bill and Cathy Stoller Center on the campus of Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., with his second place finish at 141 in his first action of the 2013-14 season.

Phillipy was one of seven Gator grapplers to place in the top six in their respective weight class this afternoon. Isaiah Hurtado and Conrad Snell each captured third place at 133 at 149. Three Gators captured fourth place in their respective weight classes in Jordan Gurrola (125), Tavis Ino (157) and Andrew Reggi (197) while Anthony Figueroa finished in fifth place at 133.

The senior wrestler started the day with back-to-back victories by fall over Clackamas' Jered Sublet at 1:52 and at 2:31 over Matt Gay (unattached). Phillipy won his quarterfinal match by a 12-2 major decision over Peter Shea (Clackamas). He advanced to the championship match by defeating Clackamas' Robbi Rizzolino by fall at 4:32. Oregon State's Joey Delgado captured the title at 141 by defeating Phillipy by a 12-7 decision.

Also wrestling for the first time this season, senior Isaiah Hurtado captured third place at 133 by going an impressive 6-1. He started off the day with a 16-1 technical fall decision over Washington State's John Morrison. In his next match, he defeated Clackamas' Stevvan Knoblauch by fall (2:45). In his only blemish of the day, Hurtado lost by a 3-1 decision to Oregon State's Jake Hathaway. Hurtado came back with four straight wins to capture third place including defeating Hathaway by a 5-4 decision in the third place match.

Snell also was wrestling for the first time this season also went a stirring 6-1. The Gator senior started the day with a 16-2 major decision over Simon Fraser's Tanner Spray. In his only blemish of the day, Snell lost to Southwest Oregon's Javier Mandera by a 3-0 decision. He then won his next four straight matches by fall including two in the first thirdty seconds of the match. Snell advanced to the third place match by defeating Pacific's Ryan Baxter by fall (2:34). In the third place match, Snell won by a 7-5 decision over Oregon State's Jared Reis.

Jordan Gurrola and Tavis Ino each went 4-2 to finish in fourth place in their respective weight classes. After finishing in second place last weekend at the U21 Junior College/College Open at SF State, Gurrola started the day with a 7-0 decision over Simon Fraser's Matt Dignan. He then lost to Oregon State's Jordan Palmer by a slim 6-4 decision. Gurrola bounced back with three straight wins to advance to the third place match. In the third place match, Gurrola lost by a 4-0 decision to Simon Fraser's Skylor Davis.

Ino captured his second straight fourth place finish this weekend. The redshirt freshman started his day with a 15-0 technical fall win over Kody Ergeson. In his quarterfinal match, Ino won by a 13-3 major decision over Southwest Oregon's Quinn Johnston. He then lost to Oregon State's RJ Pena lost by fall (1:42) in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Ino won by a 8-7 decision over Highline's John Hedge. Clackamas' Eleazor DeLuca defeated Ino for the third place title at 157.

Reggi finished in fourth place at 197 by also going 4-2 this afternoon. The redshirt junior started off the day receiving a bye and then lost to Tyler Cormier by an 8-4 decision. In the consolation bracket, Reggi won four straight matches two by fall, one by major decision and one by forfeit. In a rematch from earlier in the day, Reggi lost by a slim 10-9 decision to Cormier in the third place match.

Anthony Figueroa went 5-2 this afternoon including defeating Clackamas' Jordan Brewer by a 17-6 major decision to capture fifth place at 133.

The Gators as a team recorded 15 wins by fall, the third most amongst teams in the open. Oregon State recorded 34 wins by fall and Clackamas had 21. SF State's Conrad Snell, Highline's Ben Tynan and Oregon State's Aaron David each had four for the most in the open. Snell's four came in a total time of 4:47. Dylan Phillipy recorded three wins by fall while Dylan Furtado, Isaiah Hurtado and Andrew Reggi each had had two.

Other teams that participated in this year's Mike Clock Open were Pacific University, Oregon State University, University of Idaho, Western Oregon University, Simon Fraser University, Boise State University and Stanford along with some clubs and junior colleges.

The Gators will return to the mat a week from today when they participate in the Roadrunner Open at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.
