Reggi and Flores Place in Top 4; Gators Finish 8th at Roadrunner Open

FRESNO---SF State junior wrestlers Andrew Reggi and Daniel Flores placed in the top four in their respective weight classes to lead the way for the Gator grapplers at this afternoon's Roadrunner Open. Reggi placed second at 197 while Flores finished in fourth place at 141. As a team, the Gators finished in 8th place out of 27 teams in a meet dominated by Division I institutions.

The Gators sent 18 wrestlers to this year's Roadrunner Open at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., this afternoon. Among the other institutions that wrestled in this afternoon's open including the Gators were Navy, Stanford, Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Maryland, Grand Canyon, Embry-Riddle and Menlo.

Reggi finished in second place as he opened up the day with a 16-0 technical fall win over Embry-Riddle's Troy Killgore in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Reggi defeated Grand Canyon's Marcus Haughian. The junior wrestler advanced to the championship match by defeating Bakersfield's Reuben Franklin by a thrilling 11-10 decision.

In the championship match, Reggi wrestled Maryland's Christian Boley who is currently eighth in the nation in Division I. Boley defeated Reggi by a 10-4 decision to capture the title at 197.

Flores went 6-2 in his first action of the season at 141. He started off the day with a 4-3 decision over Chris Baldwell of Boise State. Flores then was defeated in round two of the championship bracket by a 16-4 major decision to Bakersfield's Timmy Box. The junior grappler came back with five straight wins to advance to the third place match. Of his wins, one was by a 4-3 decision over Embry-Riddle's Anton King, a 2-1 win over teammate Dylan Phillipy and a 5-3 victory in round one of sudden victory.

The Covina, Calif., native advanced to the third place match by receiving a medical forfeit win over Box. In the third place match, Flores lost to Fresno City's Ali Naser by a 6-3 decision.

Besides Reggi (7-3) and Flores, three other Gators posted winning records today in Fresno. Isaiah Hurtado, Vicente Aboytes and Zach Jimenez all went 3-2 at 133, 165 and 184 respectively.

Hurtado (9-3) started off the day with a 12-3 major decision win over Embry-Riddle's Mason Saldana. He then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Bakersfield's Frank Lomas. In the quarterfinals, Hurtado lost to Ryan Mango (Stanford-unattached) by a 20-9 major decision. Mango was the eventual champion at 133. Hurtado came back and defeated Grand Canyon's Lino Estrada by a 5-2 decision in the consolation round. Maryland's Tyler Goodwin (who finished in 5th place) eliminated Hurtado by a 5-2 decision.

Aboytes (5-4) opened up his day with a with a heartbreaking 6-5 loss in the first round of the tiebreaker to Navy's Peyton Walsh, who finished in third place. The redshirt junior came back with a win over Clay Teixeira (Cal Poly-unattached) by an 11-0 decision. Aboytes received a medical forfeit win over Travis Berridge (Cal Poly-unattached). He advanced to the next round by a 7-4 decision over Fresno City's Kevin Corbett. Aboytes was eliminated by Appalachian State's Zack Strickland by fall at 2:19. Strickland ended up placing fourth.

At 184, Jimenez lost his first match by a 3-2 decision in the second round of sudden victory to Grand Canyon's Austin Guan. He rebounded with three straight wins including two by 11-4 decisions over Fresno City's Preston Hill and Menlo College's Erick Parsons. Jimenez was eliminated in the consolation round of 5 by Navy's William Miller, who defeated the Gator grappler by fall at 2:51. Miller placed sixth in this afternoon's tournament.

The Gators had 17 points to finish in eighth place and were the only NCAA Division I institution to finish in the top 10. Maryland captured the team title with 81 points.

SF State will open up its dual part of the 2013-14 regular season this Thursday, November 21 at 6pm, when the Gators travel to Redding, Calif., for a non-conference dual with the Simpson University Red Hawks at the Heritage Student Life Center. The Gators will then host Cal Poly in a week from today at 1pm in a non-conference dual at The Swamp.
